Most of the time when I open a thread (either in the same window or a new window/tab) the whole width of the page is visable, thus making it easy to read. However, every so often a thread opens such that I have to scroll left to right in order to read it. When this happens it appears to be thread specific as it happens every time said thread is opened, but then not when a different thread is opened.

Anyone any ideas?

Usually because someone has posted an outsize picture, or put a long stream of letters, with no space between them, on their posting. Like so:

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Edit: if you put a couple of spaces in the string, the page contracts, as if by magic!

If the thread has a wide photo or a wide link to another page, it will increase the width of the page.

Try the following: minimise all programs that are running so that you can see all the icons on your desktop, right click anywhere on the screen (but not an icon), click on Properties, click on the Settings tab (very right hand one) and increase your screen resolution using the slide.

It's only page specific. So if the wide piccy (for that's what it usually is) is on page 3 of a thread the other pages will be fine.
