Hello,

I had a similar problem once before in that the leg would trim up but not down. This was rectified by bridging out the solonoid which seemed to free everything up and it as worked just fine since.

Until today, when after a full day on the water the leg wouldn't trim up using the trim button. However, the leg will trim up using the trailer button. As this is the case I am presuming it cannot be the up solonoid. I have played with the trim up switch and get nothing.

Any ideas?

Thanks

sounds like mercruiser i had
could be the the sender units on the side, i think one side indicates position and other side is limits travel on the bottom button.
to lift it your having to use both buttons together.
mine was like this for first 5 years, didnt bother me, apparently they only survive a couple of years, from memory about £60-70 to buy.
good luck

Ian - I could be wrong here, but I have a sneaking suspicion that there are two separate solonoids - one for the usual 'up and down' movement circuit, and one for the trailer circuit.

Either way, they're easy to test - just take a short length of wire and 'jump' the solonoid out of the circuit. BTW - solonoids fail all the time. I even had a duff brand new one, once....

This is a tough problem, I know that one,
there is a limit switch on the sterndrive to prevent you trim up too high, when this switch is broken, or more likely the wire that goes to the switch, is broken, in the "bell housing" of the drive, you have that sympton. To replace this switch + wire is a very big job (the drive has to go off), a job only for the experience Mercruiser engineer. Maybe a handy engineer can investigate this wire, and try to find the place where its broken, and try to fix it, (did it ones)but still a difficult job. As long this is not repaired your trim up will intermittantly work. A temporary solution is short the trim limit switch, wires come together close to the trim pump. Another solution is connecting the wires from the trailer switch to the trim up switch, (the "trailer switch " ignores the position of the trim limit switch), but then there is no protection for trimming up too high.
I hope you understand my bad english, if you don't , don't hesitate to send PM, can give you my phone number
good luck!

I had this last year. Agree with the above, the limit switch. Comes as a kit with both limit and indicator (the other side) I just replaced the limit switch. as stated above, replacing the switch and wire per factory is a big job, as it feeds through where the drive connects. instead I routed the wire through an existing hole in the transom used for log/fishfinder etc. dead easy. there is a description of how to set up the limit switch on the net, google finds it.

Hi,

You guys are top drawer. THANKS to everyone for the above info.

I don't know if it helps but having slept on it and re-counted how the day went. The trim up switch must have been working right up unto my putting the boat back on the trailer.

I did "go at the trailer" a bit more aggressive than I should have. I am wondering if the skeg bottomed out and somehow caused the problem.

That said it can't have bottomed out too severely as the trailer switch worked immediately.

BartW: Regarding the shorting of the Trim Limitter wires. You say they come together close to the pump. I don's suppose you have any further info on how I could locate these and short them to test if that is definately the problem?

THANKS FOR EVERYTHING.

Take 5,
this info was perfectly shown on a drawing in the maintenance manual, unfortunotly this manual went with the boat when I sold it, and as I am waiting for my new boat I am unable to give you more precise info right now. Without the drawing it is almost impossible to find out. Tonight I will look around on the net if I can find more info.

Take5, there might be a way to find that wire of the trim limit switch, if there is enough space in your engine room, so that the backside of your engine is easy accecable.
when you look at the sterndrive from the inside (behind the engine) there must be two pair of wires going in to the drive.
One is for the trim position indicator (on the helm) and the other is for the trim limit switch.
If you unty these wires, following them to the inside of the engine room, they will end on some connectors, close to the hydraulic trim pump,
now its easy, if you disconnect them one after one, you will notice that eather the trim position indicator on the dashboard won't work, or the trim up switch won't work in any position of the drive (except the trailer switch will work)
now you have find the connection of your trim limit switch, and you can bypass that one. its Worth having a look !
good luck with it.

shouldn't this conversation be on the other forum called "practical boat owner "? no no, I like it more here ! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
