Having got my boat out of the water in December I am desperately wanting to relaunch but with a week of minus thermometer readings what are the essential out of water chores that can be done in sub zero temperatues?

1 Blow your nose
2 Check/change raw water impeller
3 Blow your nose again
4 Update OpenCPN version and plug-ins on boat PC
5 Check all through hull connections are running free
6 Pour a generous Scotch - and enjoy!

Any of them really, though you might have to arrange some local heating for any epoxy or GRP work. I rebuilt a small section of my previous boat’s aft deck in the snow, with a 3kw fan heater blowing into a sort of 3-foot-square low tent made of heavy PVC tarpaulin.

As a Canadian friend of mine once told me, “there’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad gear” :)

August is a great month for fitting-out. Failing that, make sure that the damned thing still floats and get on with jobs at home. If desperate, pay someone in the yard to antifoul and polish the topsides, or join the peasantry and do it yourself. Sailing is supposed to be fun, so don't spoil it.

There are no essential out of water chores to be done in sub zero temperatures.

In the UK sailing is a seasonal activity. Winter, particularly in sub zero temperatures, is a time to enjoy Sunday pub lunches by a roaring, open fire.

If you’re suffering sailing withdrawal symptoms, buy a Pilot Book of a new-to-you area. This should quell your unrest.

Some items spring to mind.
If you have Blakes seacocks strip and inspect and lubricate, refit and make these the first check when afloat and adjust if needed.
Inspect and replace anodes on the outside of the hull , perhaps a check of the engine ones too.
If you have rubber hoses to your gas system inspect for expiry date, and replace with new hose , test after fitting- no yellow flame.
Fresh water purifying tablets and flushing out water tank.

Write a note to yourself to remind you to leave the boat in the water next winter and enjoy it on the better days and take it out of the water in the spring for a week when the weather is better for doing those chores that are necessary.

That is what we used to do... Better still sail off somewhere warm. 2 weeks south of the UK will do.
