Wonder how that squares with EU law , but then they seem to have special dispensations in many areas to protect their industry and farmers

I live in France have done so for 15 years and am Gérant (managing director) of a French investment business. I do not know of any law that says you can't rent out a boat or home etc. unless you are French! You may have to be a French resident and therefore taxpayer to make use of tax concessions granted to renting, especially homes, but there are plenty of homes rented by non French. Some of them into the French social housing programme. Indeed there are investment programmes available to French tax payers irrespective of their nationality, that are specifically designed to acquire homes and then rent.

Boats have to be coded and "suitable" for purpose and you have to fulfil many requirements but being French is not one of them.

Interested in where you get your information from

Regarding Greece, there are thoughts about giving the right to private leisure crafts to be chartered but there is no legislation yet. When the thoughts of the Ministry will be anything else than an interview i'll post it here so that i can give you something to write about...

An interesting possibility. The boat will probably have to be Greek flagged as, if it's under a UK ( or other flag ) it is subject to other law.

This would appear to be an effort to bring boats back under the Greek flag? Not sure it will come to much as the financial penalty for being Greek flagged and a business would at first appear to be fairly onerous what with having to put ones head above the tax parapet.

Raises all sorts of issues with 'licencing' as a skipper and commercial and other responsibilities, a large can of worms I suspect.

Here's an update:
Update on the professional boat licence situation. Apparently , a bill was tabled just before christmas that would have enabled private boats to charter, as long as they paid VAT and tax on the income. The bill was defeated. Another bill, however, is still under discussion that will end the ridiculous system of charter boats having to report to the Port Police for paper stamping at the beginning of very charter.
Regards,
