Took two year old son and his great aunt, who's not been on boat before, to Priory Bay today for lunch. Anchored away from the dingies and near some others boats, and all was fine for a while with sea nice and calm. Then, in the space of 30 minutes the following:

1) Sports boat towing large tube goes by at 20 knots plus, giving us, oohhh, a good 10 yards. Kettle was on the hob, and just managed to save it from flying across the cabin.
2) The topaz sailing dingies appear with youngsters in control, or lack of it more like. Sitting enjoying dessert when aunt says 'That boat's going to hit us'. Not wrong, it did, and so did the one behind. First one proceded to bounce its way down our starboard side. Second managed not to. I don't think any damage done, but didn't have time to check properly on return. Trainer guy in RIB berated youngster and profuse apologies to us. Loads of sea, why have them tooling around the anchored boats?
3) Largish RIB doing a good 25 knots drops off the plane about 20 yards from us. The wake had us pitching wildly.

Had enough at this point, as the topaz instructer RIBS creating loads of wash, so we upped the hook and left.

I know we all have an equal right to the sea, but when there's so much of it, and it wasn't all that busy on the water today, are people so flaming daft.

On the plus side, son waving at lots of boats today and got lots of waves back, so not all bad!!!

Rant over.

I gave up shouting and moaning at people, because of wash, just doesnt do any good they never listen and are more likely to hurl abuse at you, plus it just winds me up. No point in it.
If you see them in the pub afterwards, then you can have a quiet word in their ear!

I do admit to wacking a german in mallorca, who almost took the bow off my boat at thirty knots, he thought it was funny, didnt after he had to extract my fist from his mouth. Got banned for the pub!

Yes you're right, that's life. Mebbe I should stop expecting people to show a bit of consideration for others and be pleased when they in fact do so.

Well, it's tricky. Topaz's are not very fast boats, and don't make much progress against the tide - especially when being sailed by beginners. Therefore, if they sail out into the full tide off Bembridge, they just get swept downtide, all get separated and the rescue boat has a bit of a nightmare time trying to keep everybody together. Keeping beginners out of the tide is very common - in Cowes, the UKSA takes everybody out on the Shrape, for example.

This is not to escuse them hitting you - they shouldn't have done that, and I would assume that they'll receive some well worded encouragement not to do that again. Just trying to give an explanation as to what they're doing there.

Well I wasn't very proud of myself, but when this fat, cigar smoking German laughing chap, started taking the piss out of me in German, which I speak, to his friends, something snapped!
This is after I had been very reasonable and told him it was a little silly doing that kind of thing, to be honest Englander would have cut his boat in half.
Two of my mates had to haul me off him, the red mist had come down, I wanted his viens in my teeth!
Silly really.

But mobos don't make wakes, and what harm does a little rocking do. I mean if it was a raggie complaining he (or she) would be slagged off so it is like a breath of fresh air to hear mobos complaining about other mobos.

It became evident that the topaz's were struggling in the tide, even though only just starting to ebb, as we watched them going all over the place, and I don't blame the youngsters in them. I don't understand why the instructors didn't place them onto the other side of the bay which was all but deserted, rather than lead them out to within 100 yards uptide of the anchored boats, and the rocks at the NW end of the bay not far away either.

No problem with a "little rocking", just with large amounts of unexpected rocking caused needlessly that throws people like my son off balance potentially causing injury.

On the subject of mobos complaining about other mobos, it's the small minority of selfish mobo nitwits that gives all us mobos a bad name.

I was in Priory Bay on Monday 24th. Very quiet, no fast boats, no jet skis, just peace and quiet. What a difference a couple of days make /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
