Hello,
I am a Naval Architecture student currently involved in my senior design project. We have selected the design of a motor yacht and are conducting research in order to size the yacht. It would be incredibly useful if some of the yacht owners could provide a list of their top priorities in selecting or designing a yacht (number of crew, speed, entertainment facilities, ect) please be as specific as possible. Thank you very much for your time

Hmm, that's an odd way of approaching it, find out what everybody wants, then decide how big the boat has to be? In reality every boat is a compromise between what the owner wants, and what they can afford, drive, moor, maintain, berth etc., so I think you'd need to set some size/cost criteria

For instance, i'd like a swimming pool, gym, cinema, helipad, and supertender, but I wouldn't want those squeezed onto a 57 footer or the cabins would be a bit on the small side.

You ask people to be specific, but if you don't tighten up the criteria, you can only hope to get very generic answers like "lots of outside space" etc, and how relevant is an answer like "seating eight for dinner"? That would be an achievement on a 40 footer, and well below par on a superyacht.

Maybe a size range like 40-50 feet, or a cost range of 500 - 750k would get the more specific answers you are looking for?

Only a suggestion that may get you more useful answers

Huffy thank you very much for your input. I realize now that I should have included a little bit more information. We are looking at designing a group owned modular yacht, which means that we wouldn't have one owner's wish list to base our criteria off. we are looking at a range between 160-210 ft approximately it is to be a 12 person yacht.

"160-210 ft approximately it is to be a 12 person yacht. "
Obviously aiming at a certain market.......good move
A sensible start would be for all controls, instruments and other nomeclature to be in the Cyrillic alphabet preferably with simple easy to read sub titles for any visiting politicos.
Would be a sure fire selling point. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Only the 25 and 27 Botnia Targas have outside heads AFAIK. Actually I find them quite practical for storing wet gear and keeping odours out of the other accomodation.
Think the previous poster was referring to Fairline type targas - "sports boats/coupes" as against "flybridges".

A good outside social/party area.

This is why I think targa boats score over flybridge boats as they have a larger cockpit/social area.

In the Med - great. Peeing wet UK - Flybridge any day. Also outside galley on the newish 40ish footer I saw was strange. Social area better on a targa? Not so sure. On a FB boat, open the patio doors and it becomes the party dance floor. All that canvas to get dirty and worn out, plus taking it off at the first glimmer of sun, only to stick it all back on 30 minutes later when it starts raining.

Bollox. The square footage of outside 'social' area of a flybridge boat is invariably more than a Targa type boat because the flybridge overhangs the cockpit, often completely, so you get an upstairs as well as a downstairs plus a choice of whether to sit open to the elements upstairs on the flybridge or sheltered from the elements downstairs in the cockpit

Upstairs/downstairs is our choice for the next boat. but I'm afraid it won't be 120ft!
What do I want?
Somewhere to sit and eat and watch TV in the warm
Somewhere to sit in the sun and drink lager
A usuable shower
Speed and good sea keeping
A lottery win /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

So a Phantom 38 has more area up top than a Taga 38's cockpit .... because it overhangs the cockpit?! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Having had both I prefer the Targa for a boat under 40ft.

There is a size where the FB starts to score and that is probably over the 42ft mark. The FB is a lot more usable and you do get a decent aft deck below too.

Taga's are warmer though. It's bl**dy cold up top at 28knots.

No, you misunderstand me. I'm saying that the sum of the exterior space on a flybridge boat which includes the flybridge and the cockpit below is more than that of a Targa type boat because of the overhanging flybridge.

Blimey, that's a big boat. I don't think many (any?) on here have experience of that size of boat. Try looking at some superyacht charter web sites, they might have layout pictures to give you some ideas. I think "Boat International" is the mag for boats you couldn't buy even if you did win the lottery, so may be worth a look.
