Talking Johnny Cash, 1980 I designed fork trucks, some senior staff shipped 300 fork truck kits to Australia, intending to build, sell them and disappear, they got caught, but only around 2% of material could be traced back. Same time some purchase, goods in inspection set there own firm, sent out inquiries, excepted there quote gave themselves orders and passed incoming rubbish. For instance they used a hardened steel washer, they paid £1.20 each, I found a supplier at £0.84 a 100, spent 6 months trying to change supplier. We wonder why manufacture in in trouble, we had engineers, the whole UK system was sick.
The next 30 years I've spent supplying the boat builders, back in the 80 and 90's I've lost order for not giving back hander's , current supplier was relation or drinking buddy to senior member of staff, would not give chap a senior job in our firm.
It goes on, perhaps if it did not we might have a manufacturing data base.
