Princess V40-V42

Hi, I just put my current Monterey 262 up for sale. Curious to see how the market responds. Don't plan to upgrade till next year but don't don't want to get stuck with the old one either (having two boats at the same time). So hope buyer turn up at the end of the season /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Decided to go for a sportscruiser and not flybridge for various reasons. Who knows, maybe next time ?

Meanwhile, looking for a second hand Princess V40-V42.

Have only seen a V39 in Holland from the outside, never been on one, know them from the mags only but they look great /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif. Since none are around in our area, I plan a trip to the UK in the coming months to visit some brokers or marinas where there seem to be a lot more around.

Don't think current budget (around 130K£) stretches to an early V42 (unless maybe with sunbed layout but I want one with the large cockpit and they are more expense) so will problaby have to go for a late '90s V40 with KAD44 engines.
There seem to be a lot less available on the market than V42 model though lots were made ... don't understand why ? I would expect just the opposite.

Now, what are the sort of problems one can expect from a boat 8-9 years old, assuming normal engine hours (say 100 / year) and yearly maintenance took place ?

Any feedback is welcome, specially from current or previous owners.

Have also looked at Sealine S41 (S42 too expensive) but have read a lot of negative feedback on this one, surely can't be all that bad ? Any owners wanting to comment ?

you need to deside what you want from the boat, each one has its good and bad points,

Do you want it for good living space, [sealine]

for sea keeping [ princess]

like every boat purchase it a weighing up of the pro and con of that boat , and how you will use her, to what bits are a prioritey to you.

I entirely agree with you about using own judgement to finally select the boat one thinks best fulfills ones needs. Haven't seen any of them close, so must still get to that point (but choosing is pat of the fun isn't it ?).

I am foremost curious about negative comments from lots of forumites about S41 and am also curious to understand what wear and tear (and related costs) can be expected for similar models just under 10 years old. I don't have the experience myself, don't have any friends or people in our small inland marina that call tell me and don't always believe brokers either.

Not sure if my question makes sense ?

its a bit like buying a car the same age, you know things will wear out or become out of date[ ie chart plotters]

costs,
if the boat has been looked after and regularly maintained, things should be in good nick,
but expect to double what you think it may cost,

wear and tear,

ouch that is a big question,

what wears out,

anything and everything at some time,


If you read the forum you will see what can go wrong but also what joy it can give you.

I may need correcting here,
but here goes

Boat cast say 100,000,

berthing say

max 10,000

fuel at mo

£500 per 250 miles max

electric . depends on marina


servicing . £600 to £1,500 average per annum [ 100 hour usage]

maintenance


if you allow say 10% of boats worth you may have change one year and not the next,

Berthing, insurance, fuel and regular servicing costs are known for a V40 and not really the problem. I'm mostly concerned with unexpected service bills due to mechanical or electrical breakdowns for a boat that old. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

By the way, berthing costs in my Marina (10 miles inland, south of Terneuzen) is about 30£ per metre LOA so roughly 375£ per year for a V40. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I beiliev the V40 came with either stern drives or shafts the latter had larger engines and cost 30-40k more from new

I went true exact the same thing you do now 3 years ago, was searching same V40/39's and in the end found our Sunseeker Mustique 42 wich is 3 to 4 years older than the V40/39's we were looking for a lower price but she was/is much more complete and roomier, with 2 kids around (also 11 & 9), very important!

Yes she is older but luckely the design from Sunseeker then was years in advance.
So she still is ok now.

Also wanted shafts because we rented a few years in SoF & Croatia so knew what
the difference was, best is: take a bareboat charter a few times & try the model you like out, yes you lose some money but this is the best test you can have.
Only you are the one to judge!

A few importand things when buying second hand:
Take one with as much extra's you can, to name a few:
Aircon
Passerelle
Teak deks

things like older canvas and cussions can be replaced at pretty low costs but old electronics (esp.marine ones) can become pretty exp.

We found ours after visiting 7 other at varous locations in Europe.
