Hi everyone,
This is my first post on the forum, so be gentle with me.
I am looking to purchase a late model Princess 35,(1988- 1992) which are the best engines to go for, are the volvo 200 gearboxes as bad as i have heard, and what sort of revs are the 200's best for cruising. What are the spares availibility and prices like with the cummins units. Lastly, when were the mods like transom door and L shaped seating introduced on the flybridge.
Many thanks, any info would be useful.
Steve

You really need a post from one of our most prolific posters on this one.
according to HLB,it is a fact acknowledged by the entire cosmos that the P35 is the finest craft ever created and why anybody ever bothered to ever build anything after is a mystery/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif.
Ps think he is away boating somewhere at the moment.

The Cummins engines were generally the 250hp so you're already 50% up on power although I think VP manage to get a slightly greater percentage to the shafts.
I had a Fairline Turbo 36 with 2 x Cummins 300hp. Superb engines. Never missed a beat. Slow revving lovely lumps of cast iron.
I have heard that the gearbox on the VP 200's were weak for the power.
I'd go Cummins every time.
Spares are not much different to VP.

Thanks Guys,
confirmed what I thought, the slower running Cummins units seem to be the better option, and the gearboxes on the volvo 200's are worse than i thought, seems like the cummins powered boats are more expensive to buy, but may be cheaper in the long run. Shame HLB is away at the moment.
Thanks
Steve

When I sold my Turbo 36 with 2 x Cummins 300 hp I became aware that everyone really wanted the TAMD 61A VP's (306 hp) because of the name.

Don't pay a premium for the Cummins, because when you come to sell everyone will say "if it only had the VP 200's"!!!

Why Princess35? See my post earlier "Chosing a Flybridge"

Im in the process of choosing my next power boat. I am going for the Sealine F36. It seems to have a higher cruising speed than the Princess's. If you go for the higher spec engines, what speed do you cruise at? The boat im looking at cruises at 25k top end of 30k.

Why buy a secondhand princess over Sealine?.The same reason people prefer a basic german car over say......a fully loaded Hyundai coupe ./forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Interesting to note that on my Corniche with the TAMD41s the gearboxes had been replaced and upgraded by a previous owner. I understand that this is a pretty common phonomena with this set up.

Thanks for the posts,
miket, i take your point about VP V Cummins but I think in your case both types of engines were big slow revving, on the 35 the VP's that are installed run at higher revs I think, so maybe the cummins units are a little more desirable, I would like to go with the VP's because it would give me a wider range of boats to choose from, but they are slower, higher revving and have gearbox problems.

cliffdale, you ask, why a Princess, well I think an F36 is out of my price range , and as I have already owned a princess I know that its seakeeping is very good in the "interesting" waters of the bristol channel when ultimate top speed is not so much of an issue.

Hmm. Just found this post lurking in the deapths. If you'd seen me zooming round from Salcolmbe yesterday in a F6/7 that had been rolling along for three days all the way from Canada. You'd understand my love of the P35.

Yes, the volvo gear boxes fitted are total crap. Even Volvo said so. Mines replaced with big Hydraulic boxes. I'd love to have the Cummins 250 engines, mainly cos, sick of Volvo outlandish prices for filters and spares. Oh and of course the gearboxes that cost around 9 grand to replace with proper ones!!

HLB, I was told last week that you were the font of all knowledge on the 35, I was on one the weekend with 250 cummins, and fully loaded 4 up and rope cutters she still managed 30knts, very impressed. Any faults that you know of to look out for.
Cheers steve.

Theres no faults on the P35 that anyone knows about. Its built like a brick sh*t house. Only owner damage maybe or neglect. But check all the added bits and pieces of course and the upholstery may want renewing. I'm just getting mine done a bit at a time. Not my idea. But the upholstry blokes a bit slow!!
