Having tried many different products over the years, some cheap, some expensive, all with generally poor results.
Anybody got suggestion for achieving a good bond of paint to bare ali props. Not talking antifoul aspect...........but the initial coat that will ensure antifoul stays on.

I have just had a conversation with Blakes about this - can't seem to get anything to stick to mine either. Their advice was:

Thoroughly clean areas to be coated with surface cleaner/fresh water ,abrade with 100/120 abrasive paper and wash off ,allow to dry
Apply 2/3 coats mille drive primer
Apply 4/5 coats mille drive black/grey

These are spray can products.

I have just had to swap one of mine out due to corrosion, I have suspicion its caused by some stray current.

I have put an old one back on that I cleaned up in the meantime. I'm trying an experiment. I thought to myself what is the strongest stickiest stuff I could think of? SP Epoxy resins. So I have tried coating one in epoxy to see how it goes. Boat is coming out in 6 weeks or so and it's an old prop so can't do any harm.

Will let you know the results

there is a unversal metal primer made by hammerite its dries red and ive used this on ali props and outdrives in the past including my present volvo dp drives which spent 3 to 4 year in water at Poole with no bad effects - but dont use hammerite as finish coat the primer is brill, but hammer finish is not.

We have never really bothered priming ours as such.

Depending on if the OH has refurbed them (panel beater by trade) or they have gone for a proffesional refurb depends on what finish they have. If the OH has done them they just get a coat of matt black, which wears off pretty quickly on the blade ends.

We use our boat a lot though so fouling on the props has never been an issue.

Another vote for the red special metal primer from Hammerite. Did have to touch up some areas last year but pretty good. I did put black hammerite over that and Trilux over that but there seems no way to permanently keep antifoul on

Last 2 years have used U-Pol etch primer from halfords. Its probably alright for ally wheels, but only limited sucess on props....... Be interested to hear how you get on with the epoxy. In the mean time will try the Hammerite special metal primer.
