Primary Fuel Filter

My newer boat recently acquired doesn't have a clear bowl fuel filter to see any water or muck build up, it is recommended to bleed out any water depoits every 10 hrs. Now there are two bolts on the fuel filter , one right at the bottom and the other about 4cm higher on the side.

Am i right in assuming I just loosen the lower bolt and hopefully a little water will drip through before the pink stuff comes out?

The old filter had a black thumb screw to let out water

Any advice as always really appreciated
Simon

Other way round I think. The bottom bolt in the centre of the bowl (?) will hold the bowl on, and undoing it will let you take the complete thing off for cleaning etc. The bolt a bit higher up I would think is the drain one. Unless there's a second bolt on the bottom sort of offset from centre. At least this was the setup on my CAV (I think) water traps\prefilters on my Mirage.

If you've just got the boat, I'd take it off and clean it right out so you know where you stand right from the start.

According to the guy who did my BSS inspection recently - glass bowls are not allowed anymore. Well certainly not for petrol boats. I had to buy a complete new filter to comply.

You are right, glass filter bowls on any boats are now taboo according to the much hated BSS regulations.

there is a lot of generalisation going on here.

1. there is no difference between petrol and diesel.

2. location is the key. in the engine space must be fire resistant. outside engine space need not be fire resistant.

3. 'glass' bowls are not banned, but must meet fire resistance (if required) and be of marine quality.

3. 'glass' fire resistant marine filters are available, with water drain facility. try ASAP supplies.

4 Dont blame BSS for a boatbuilders decision to fit truck parts in the marine enviroment. Cost difference, at build stage, for a pair of marine filters over truck types less than £100

Pressum you mean a standard bakebean tin type fillter. Never seen one with two bolts in. Should screw on from the top. Just undo the bottom bolt and see what happens. I get fed up every time I get new primary filters, there a different type. Try to get the ones with a thum screw on the bottom, much easier.
