Sorry - but it's a while since I did this myself and I am just slightly foxed as to what to undo. Fuel goes in and out via a metal lid with clearly marked IN & OUT. Then under that comes the disposable filter (DELPHI HDF296). This sits on a clear glass bowl in a metal base. I could reference a photo - but I am sure you know what I am talking about. Question - which bit comes apart - and how? Maybe I'll make a YouTube video when I've got the answer! Informative responses only, please.

I presume that you are intending to change the filter element.
There should be a long bolt that goes through the top and holds all the components together. This will be between the 'in' and 'out' ports. Put a container below the unit to catch the fuel that comes out and make a note of where the 'o' rings are located when you dismantle. You'll need to bleed the air from the fuel system after you've got it back together.

Aha. Yep - I can see that. Thanks for the hints about the O rings. If the engine starts OK without a bleed can I skip that or might it give me a problem later? Getting the gloves on! Thanks - exactly what I need to know.

You'll have to bleed the system after changing the filters, I'm afraid. You'll let air into it and it'll have to be purged out.

If youve got a Bukh 20, then you should be able to bleed the air out by cracking the bleed scew on the top of the secondary engine mounted fuel filter and drawing the fuel through by the manual lever on the bottom of the fuel pump , which is next to the air intake on port side of the engine. Pull the fuel through until it re-fills the primary filter bowl, through the fuel line & pump and air bubbles stop coming out of the engine fuel filter bleed screw, just getting pure diesel sans air. Then close the bleed screw and turn over the engine - this should pull the fuel through the injector pump and injectors without needing to crack open the injectors themselves to bleed them. In any event this works for me with that 1ry & 2ry fuel filter set up.

I have a Volvo pre-filter which sounds very similar to yours. I change the filter every year and do the following: obtain a container that can be lifted up to cover the filter. Undo the screw at the top (in middle) until the whole filter (glass base and pre- filter) comes loose. Remove all, clean glass base and then re-assemble with correct seals, usually provided with new filter. This is now the tricky bit; before fitting fill the whole with diesel and very carefully locate in position and screw the top bolt home. Some diesel may leak out but this pre filling will reduce the air bleeding time considerably. I have a Volvo-penta engine and before air bleeding it is very important to align the crank shaft in the correct position - see manual. Hope this helps.

:eek: This post is so nice and greaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat
