Diesel filters are available in 2, 10 and 30 microns. Anyone know the pros/cons of each size for the primary filters?

Thanks in advance

2 micron filters are too fine ,this is almost the level of filtration applied to aviation fuel. 30 micron is about the level of filtration applied to your sump oil.

you are asking about primary filtration that suggests you have other filtration down stream I would go 30 microns and 10 micron down stream.

But where did you get these numbers from and what do they mean? My guess is they are nominal ratings which means that particles above these sizes may pass thru but not in bulk. The issue for you is cleanliness of fuel against economy of scale if you go too fine the elements may clog up quick.

I guess it depends on the engine

on my perkins, the constructor said a 2micron primary filter is utterly useless as the secondary-engine filter filters to 10u, and the engine would run even with slightly bigger impurities...

pûtting too thin a filter before the engine mounted filter could just be an invitation for it to be quickly clogged, and render the engine filter next to useless

FWIW I've had some 2 micron Racors (R24) on my Yanmars for some months as it was all I could buy, and they have not clogged prematurely. Obviously with dirty fuel they would clog more quickly.

Usually I use 10 microns and personally I like to have the prefilter at least equal to, if not finer than, the final filter simply because the prefilters are bigger. That way I only have to change the final about once a year. Works for me!

same set up I run on my Yanmar as well - primaries are easily and cheaply changed; I don't really see this as a 2 stage process!

can't see the secondary to check easily so it could go without warning etc etc
