Saw an announcement today, Alan Priddy plans to design, build and project manage but not drive a hydrogen powered around the world attempt. Scheduled for 2004 the trip is planned to take 3 months with a top speed of 15 - 18 kts.

One small problem is that he requires 250 KW of power, and each KW costs $40,000!! So for the power cells alone he needs $10,000,000!!

Quote from the paper "Priddy, who expects to have a scale model built by this time next year, is certain that this multi million pound project will be successful"

Another quote from same report "But it was partly due to the polution crisis the crew uncovered in Newfoundland - which forced them to scrap the last 2000 miles of their attempt - that the hydrogen plans were moved to the front burner"

I don't mean to be cynical, but seem to recall that other problems caused the abandonment of the last attempt earlier this year, including a chronic lack of funds. Would be very interested to know how he plans to raise mega bucks, particularly with his recent track record, which ultimately ended in failure.

I wish him luck in the venture, suspect he'll need lots of it!

Will Dom be acting as a sponsor again? Can you use S####n in a hydrogen cell?/forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Re: almost correct

I'm not sure if Ljs is reporting things quite correctly. "Hydrogen-powered" may have been misreported. The actual venture is to be "powered by hydrocarbons", as I understand. I believe that the project plans to harness natural resources in a round the world run, this time hardly stopping at all: you will recall that the last project went okay but for the refuelling every 500-1000 miles.

This time, instead of waiting until Malta, Priddy wil exit Gibraltar and wham straight into the nearest fish farm. Then, once totally surrounded by the fish farm, he will dial up the Malta fish farm control panel by mobie phone and immediately trigger a homing signal for the Gibraltarian fish, which will all swim off towards Malta with Priddy neatly esconced, where he whams into the next fish farm and so on, thereby building up a large fish-powered contraption which will circle the globe at quite reasonable speed.

Quote from the crew: "That git tcm is a total shitbag. Okay, so he was right last time about not being fast enough, the crew and boat being rubbish, not having enough money, the windows pointing skywards, nobody much giving a toss about the record, and everything else. However, this time I have total confidence in the crew and the sponsorhip is completely assured what with several jumble sales and sponsoship from the city of S****horpe"

Clive Tully was unavailable for comment.

Re:Nearly almost correct

Nah, definitely says hydrogen powered. Spose that they won't need passports as they're not stopping anywhere, one less planning item to go wrong, also being surrounded by and powered by fish they won't need any food - providing of course that they remember their fishing rods!!! and bait, oh and hooks.

So all in all tcm you have absolute belief in this new venture, so how are they going to get to Gib? Also are you responsible for putting the #### in S####thorpe?

Re: Hydrogen powered flying pigs

This must be tosh. Priddy doesn't (on the evidence) have the skills to do this, let alone ability to find $10m. Doing it at all is a tall order, but doing it by 2004 is more implausible still. With so little time, why spend next year making a scale model? If only 250KW and 17 knots the REAL THING must be pretty small. And why spend $10m on a poxy 250KW egg whisk of a hydrogen fart powered motor? You could have a new 250KW outboard every 5 miles or so for that kinda money. Nah LJS, the Taunton Times or whatever has got this story all wrong imho :)

Re: almost correct

I think the crew was trying to make a start on this hydrogen powered thingy just before SOC sank, according to an article in the Mirror a while back the vessel was abandoned, full of raw sewage, in the arctic.

I wonder why they were keeping the sewage? Perhaps Soltron has some secret ability to turn crap into fuel?

I reckon most of most of the £10 million is going to spent on flying curries from a number of Indian restaurants to the new Spirit of Faeces in order to ensure a ready supply of raw material for fuel production.

Re: unreliable information

what about emails from suddenly-expert-boatie Clive Tully and sent via MBY office which slags the naysayers and insists that "we WILL return to Gibraltar with the under 50 foot rtw powerboat record"?

Top quality newspaper(!) wouldn't publish crap like this, saw it yeaterday in Britain's waterfront newspaper, All At Sea, never seen or heard of it before but to be fair has loads of interesting articles all well up to date, but this particular one caught my eye!!
