The guy has lost the plot.

There was me thinking that his last attempt failed because it was under funded, ill conceived, a badly designed boat and poorly planned, nope according to this article it failed because of an environmental disaster! There's gilding the lilly then there is a complete loss of reality.

Now he couldn't do it using conventional technology at 15-18knots what makes him think he can do it with fuel cell technology. You can just imgaine being able to get parts for a FC in Delhi.

There was none more enthusiastic than I when he set off, I was even part of the floatilla to see him off from Cardiff, but please AP is now making an arse of himself and would stand more chance of sucess in building castles in swamps.

I just can't be arsed...

Re: or, 4th time lucky?

"Listen, lad: I built this kingdom up from nuthin'. When I started here, all of this was swamp! Other kings said it was *daft* to build a castle in a swamp, but I built it all the same, just to show 'em! It sank into the swamp. SO, I built a second one! That sank into the swamp. So I built a *third* one. That burned down, fell over, *then* sank into the swamp. But the fourth one stayed up! And that's what you're gonna get, lad: the *strongest* castle in these islands." - Monty Python and the Holy Grail

Re: obsession

More like suicide wish...I bet he won't get any backing for this next round unless Tully's book sells like hot cakes, and by the way who will now accept sponsorhsip from Cardiff City ? Let's just look at their results so far:-

Captain Scott's expedition to the Artic
Alan Priddy's expedition back to Cardiff via RoW

so there will be no pool pay outs just yet..

Re: tin hats

hmm, we'll be getting a good drubbing for this i expect.

The new project says he will design and build but not skipper the boat. Seems they've got a good way down the line if they have a skipper and plan to go in 12 months. Mind you, sounds a possible lashup if it only takes 12 months to build and it sounds expensive. Can anyone give me a lift to B+Q please?

Re: tin hats

Well he can't design the boat unless nurse loosens the retaining straps so he can hold his crayons with both hands.....................and is it possible to make a fuel cell only out of wicker????

Running for a fox hole....oh no TCM's already in that one...

I just can't be arsed...

Re: Lidols have got a 2:1 special on Fuel Cells NM

I've got some Duracells. Any good??

(Probably more reliable)

Re:more info on fuel cells

Got a haircut today and read daily mail while waiting. It had big article on Hydrogen fuel cells. Looked impressive, they were talking about it being in cars 10 years from now etc.

Only catch seems to be "density" of energy storage. Whereas 10 gal of petrol/diesel is small and light and will get you 300 miles +++, the hydrogen is a still a prob. In the Honda fuel cell prototype, which is about Clio sized and about 60bhp, the hydrogen tank is 34gallons and the car's range is only 220 miles. And they get the massive amount of hydrogen needed into such a "small" size by compressing it at 5000psi. Can you imaging the weight of a 34gal tank that contains a 5000psi gas? Jeeze, it must be like lugging the Queen Mary around in your boot!

Apart from this, it seemed jolly impressive. The cars are driven by electric motors, with current supplied by the fuel cells, so starting torque etc should be good.

But not sure how Priddy's machine will work. To get 250kw and a decent range he will need a Zeppelin full of hydrogen, pumped up to 5000psi. And several places to refuel en route. I mean fuel stops all over the world that have 5000psi Hydrogen on tap..... Hmmm. Doing the voyage in 2004 is looking ambitious.....

Re:5000 psi = 300 bar

as far as i kno, the airtanks are 200 bar. or issit 200 psi? if 200 bar, it is luggable BUT only 10 litres = 2 gals, soo 17 times that must indeed be another engine or two.

Good idea for post-fire brigade uk perhaps, as not much left of car/people in case of accident?

Re:more info on fuel cells

Congrats on haircut and I must say you look very smart and professional. Much better now that you've got rid of that silly pony tail.

Re the hydrogen car bit, well if you'd read a bit further through the Mail, (suggest you change hairdresser to one that's a bit trendier and busier and hence will keep you waiting longer so you can read the full paper), you'd have found an interesting bit on the production of hydrogen.

See, it appears that there's two main ways to get hydrogen. The easiest is from fossil fuel (oil or natural gas) or by electrolysis of water. Now getting the hydrogen from fossil fuel is a bit stupid really since since the environmental effects of getting it from fossil fuel is much the same as with petrol. So might just as well burn the petrol,

Making H by electrolysis requires a substantial (no figures given) amount of electricity and of course most electricity comes from the burning of fossil fuel in the first place.

So it seems that trying to convert cars (or boats) to run on hydrogen solves no problems at all and in fact may well be self defeating.

Still think red diesel (with added Soltron) is the best stuff.

Re:5000 psi = 300 bar

Divers air tanks are indeed about 200bar, 3000psi. One of them can puree a large Great White shark, when chewed at the end of a movie. A 34gallon tank rated to 5000psi is a monster piece of kit. Unless Daily Mail gottit wrong....?

Daily Mail, read all about it

Oops sorry Colin for not reading the WHOLE DailyMail. Still, good to hear you're on the case though! Yes, agree about hydrogen. These "wonder fuels" features usually fail to mention that fossil fuel has to be burned further up the food chain.

Haircut all ok, thanks. I went for a Kevin Keegan as belated mark of respect after 3-1 drubbing of MUtd.

Anyway, as forum newspaper reader, what dya reckon to article in today's independent about UFOs? I reckon they're right - I definitely saw a UFO a couple of years ago.

Are you sure this UFO wasn't KevL's Fray Bentos pie? /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

My son's Frey Bentos pie !

I'll have you know that I am not that stupid ...... errrmmm.....well..... 'cept for the time with the outboard experience.
