price upon application rant

Is anyone else infuriated by this phrase? It's mad. Something's for sale, which means they want some money for it - but how much? Who knows? Oh, how very vulgar needing to know the price, it seems to say. So, i've gotta ringem up and say, how much. But then they want all my details. No mate, just tell me how much it is.

Rubbish. If you want to buy a boat that costs 100k, you can (these days) compare them down to the last nut and bolt. But surely rich gits don't need to know the price of things? Oh yes they blimmin well do - they care a lot. thye mite have a house or a car or a boat that costs 10 times a normal one butthey don't pay over the odds, and they don't invariably spend 10x for everything.

Worst of all advertising POA sounds as tho they're gonna size you up, put you thru the hoops and charge more if they think you can afford it.

I *think* it is a british thing - or at least it's not amerrican - yank boat broker bosh the price in no problem - "reduced from $10milion to $8.5 million" . Much better, and no nonsense.

Agree wholeheartedly.
Its as if us" lesser" mortals arnt allowed such info. The fact that you may have just won the lottery - sad to say I havent - does not seem to come into it.

Perhaps money is not meant to be discussed in polite society????

agree absolutely

otoh, it is a more common way of trading than one can imagine, especially wholesale: diamonds and other precious stones, tea, tobacco, and in general all merchandise subject to a more or less personal evaluation of quality (boats?), if one is not one of the two parties, it is absolutely impossible to know at which price a transaction has been made

now if you want to buy a dozen 12million dollars yachts, that will put you in a very different perspective -.<)

Maybe the seller doesn't want the tax man to know what he ought to be putting on his return...?

Several years ago I worked for a firm that sold sawmills & we participated at several european and UK shows. We always started by putting the price on the machine(they were cheap!) but only on the first day of the show - and we inevitably had to take it down as it was against the 'show regulations' - apparently the competion always complained - particularly our German friends! Is this a similar sort of thing? - mustn't let the competition know?

Electronics seems to be one of the worst culprits in the market. POA or ring for our best price in magazines.

Now I do understand it is a buoyant market with prices dropping and upgrades by the day but for the poor customer (me) this just infuriates. Websites being some of the worst offenders, ring us to get price etc. If I wanted to ring around I would have done, but as it is I decided to use the web for my comparisons.

Updates to prices on line can be done instantly, so it is just laziness by the company. In many ways it is bad for business as I will immediately move on and find a site that has the balls to show their prices.

The other thing that seems most common is registering with the site in order to buy something, why must I do this, why do they want me to have a user name and password to spend £20 on line. The high street do not do this, they accept my tender and ring it into the till. Sometimes I will use the company again in the future but forget I have either used them before of forget my log in details.

They do not allow a second account to be registered to the same address so I must go through the rigmarole of finding my account details.

My rant is now over.

You will doubtless be saddened to hear that we don't all have a copy of Classic Boat.
P'raps you can enlighten us?

Agree entirely with the thread: what possible incentive is there for me to do business with a company so ashamed of its prices it daren't publish 'em?

The sales person obviously doesn't recognise just how important you are.

Either that or they might need to gain extra details on aspects of the product you want that might affect the price.

Re: new/old

ok ok, i spose it's fair enuf on a new massive boat (say) with gigantic flexibility on spec. But not on secondhand ones, i mean, no very good reason not to publish a price then, is there?

It annoys me no end. I just feel that if they are too snooty to publish the price, they can keep the thing as far as I am concerned.
HWMBO has a thing about prices without VAT. Really makes him cross. And the lousy service one gets these days.
Could go on.
Like my picture? /forums/images/icons/smile.gif
Found out how to do it at last, thanks to several of you. Especially Julie
