Price Increases a coming...

I dont mind paying my way if everyone else that uses the thames also pays, rowers, fishermen, swimmers, triathletes yada yada

How much use do rowers, fishermen, swimmers, triathletes yada yada make of the locks, which are by far the most expensive bit of the system? How much dredging is done for their benefit? How much do they need waste disposal and pump-out facilities?

A good point made well.
Majority of folks who use any navigation or waterway for recreation and leisure are the ones who least need large amounts of expenditure to continue their enjoyment of the river.
A few paths made up and the odd turnstile would probably do the trick.

As for extracting extra income from water companies, the prospect of a special levy on every water bill entitled
"Dosh to subsidise boat owners on the Thames", will be one, I would await the reaction with some interest. :)

Having just looked at the EA charges, it would appear that investing in two x weekly registrations is the best way to buy 10 days of visiting time, rather than a week and three day passes. ?

Well lets do away with the locks and
open the weirs and let the river go back to its natural state. Oh dear - no water to row in or fish in or swim in.
I would love to see Henley drained in July to encourage some contributions to the coffers.

You come on this forum and castigate Thames boaters for not facing up to the need for us to pay our way and now you seek our assistance to minimise your contribution should you decide to visit ! Don't bother coming, we can manage without your paltry contribution and it will be one less mooring occupied which will be available for us.

OOO - strong words to somebody who I thought was a friend to the Thames - even though he comes from the MudWay...

Got your goat this morning?

Dare one ask where being married comes on your list ? :)

I apologise, I was trying to describe 'big motorised things that sleep 4-6 people' which, lets be fair doesn't describe the lovely Mrs OG, although some of your Chatham based members may have a few tales to tell :-D

Purely personal comment on proposed increases in charges - far too little and far too late. Will barely catch up with inflation and will provide little or no increased income.

Agreed it ain't going to work until they revisit the whole user base, screwing one group just that bit more till the pips squeak ain't going to solve the problem.

Anyone noticed any kind of contribution from RTA, thought not, what a total waste of "hot air" that is.

Unfortunately it seems that's just not possible without changes in legislation and Defra have made it clear that they have no plans for that. Even if they were prepared to consider new legislation it would be years before it could be pushed through parliament.
Beginning to think best option now would be transfer to C&RT but that will also require legislation which will probably take some years and won't happen unless government is prepared to make transitional funds available which they seem reluctant to do.
Unless there is an unexpected shift in political attitudes my boating days on the Thames will be over long before anything improves.
