Following on from landlockedpirate's thread, in particular, sunseekers, can anybody shed any light on why prices for these craft are so erratic,
Example, same year, same motors, same part of the world, similar hours, similar history, similar condition, similar inventory one at £74k the other £45k, £27k or if you prefer 60% dearer

I'm very aware of the points you both raise, but where do you find the right yardstick with this sort of situation, are there no guides similar to the auto industry?

I read on another thread somewhere that a 15-20% was about the right sort of movement on price, but 60 is almost immpossible to understand

As you say, on the face of it the cheaper one could be someone distress selling, so making it look cheap, but on the other, is it just wishful thinking?

The main problem is this is not an isolated case it appears to be the same throughout the boating world.

Also when I looked at sunseekers site and grange international they carried an even higher premium, but I guess with some sort of warranty.

this boat buying lark aint made easy is it?

and it tends to make me very hesitant when spending 80-100k of hard got by coin.

I think its a combination of the selling owners living in cloud cuckoo land and brokers with not enough guts to tell them that the boats are over priced.

Boats priced correctly (regardless of type, condition, age etc) will always sell.

where do you find the right yardstick

[/ QUOTE ] there isn't one yardstick.

local supply and demand, competition, timing re season (which can be hugely local) are all factors that will affect the price as well as the urgency of the seller, availability of local berths etc etc

however I come back to the view that by the time you have finished with the personal assesment of condition, structural survey inc proper engine analysis and at least explored the relationship between asking price and expectation you will find you can reasonably easily relate one craft with another. ie the relative asking prices aren't as as far apart as you might think and certainly in the case of boats on the market some time will be pretty close.
