Preveza Flights

We are a new syndicate with a boat in Vounaki, so we will be taking it in turns to fly to Preveza next season. Any advice on how and when to buy air tickets would be welcome (e.g. does the price rise or fall nearer the date of travel).

Also, any information about Vounaki Marina - how good is the chandlery, do they have a laundry service etc.?

Thanks

Airlines are now very crafty over prices. The cost of any given flight can rise or fall. Generally there is a reasonable price some months in advance when the seats are all unsold. As the flight begins to fill the price usually rises. The airlines know how many seats they expect to be unsold at any given number of days before the flight. Too many unsold, the price drops. Too few and it goes up. A few days before the flight there may be very few seats left, at a high price, or a lot of seats that the airline is keen to sell at any price. It is very much a lottery whether you get a cheap deal at the last minute or not, but if you are flexible over when to travel you can often do very well at the last minute. Do not worry too much if you get a very cheap return, with a return date you do not want. Charter airlines that have unsold seats on the outward leg have them again on the return. Last September I was in Turkey on a one week trip, decided to stay another week and bought a Thomas Cook return flight (outward leg already in the past and unused) for less than half what I had paid for my one week return with Excel Airways.

Talk to Carol at Greenstar Travel 01372 462226. They do a lot of villa hols and usually have spare seats. However, if you ask for seats more than a month away, you'll be paying over the odds. It's a little scarey waiting until a few weeks before you need to go, but it's always succeeded for me.

Chandlery wise. Forget it. Either Cleopatra's shop up at Preveza or George over in Nidri are good though. Most prices for serious bits are quiote close to UK.

I have had my boat in Vounaki Marina over the past year or so.
Flights are mainly on a Sunday with one or two on Wednesdays. Price of tickets varies a lot but the cheapest we found was with Excel airways(around £70 return in June). However during the school holidays most flights are full and you will have to pay around £250-£300 return. Its also worth looking at Corfu as it is possible to get a ferry from Corfu to the mainland and then drive down.
The biggest rip off is taxi fares to and from Vounaki. Last summer they were 35 Euro each way!
The marina is 95% Sunsail, there is no Chandlery at the marina but a couple of hardware shops in the village ( about 2 miles walk). There is also only the Sunsail laundry who charge 23 euros per load with extra for ironing. The shop is useless for provisioning except for the very basics.
Finally there is a disco in the hotel on Saturday night so if you want some sleep make sure you are elsewhere.

If you want more info please mail me.

Forgot to mention :-
If you stay overnight in the marina Sunsail charge you 18 euro for use of showers etc on top of your normal fee. Much better to move down the road to Palairos harbour where everything is free.
