When we pick up a buoy (with a rope strop on top of a usually very unwelcoming looking main buoy), at some state of the wind and tide we usually end up hard up against the buoy which is something I would like to avoid with my newly painted hull - any advice?

The only advice as a cat owner is to avoid picking up a buoy. I've tried various methods to stop this and none really succeed. Yarmouth was full on one visit and they suggested a mooring buoy outside. I carried on up to Newtown and anchored there. Saved money on mooring fees and food, etc. Luckily boat was well stocked.

I would suggest for OP that padding lowered down the sides of the bow is only help against paint damage. That is unless you own the buoy and can pad the outside edges of the buoy. That is unless you have a long bow sprit and can moor to the tip of the bow sprit. (not a good idea) ol'will
