Hi all,

First post here so be gentle ;)

Heading down to the Southampton boat show in September for the first time as I’m in the market for a 40”-50” cruiser or flybridge.

There are a few models I’m really keen to see and wondered if you have to pre-book viewings or is it a case that all boats can be accessed and viewed on the day?

Thanks all ??

As a serious buyer, it certainly wouldn't hurt to let the dealers know in advance that you're on the way, especially for your "top three" favourites so far.
Worst case - you will be offered free tickets and drinks on the day :)

In the general case, getting onboard a 40-50ft boat without an appointment shouldn't be an issue, especially at less busy times.
At busy times, if not pre-arranged, you might have to wait or book a time to come back in a couple of hours when it's less busy.

Agree with FP, shouldn't be an issue accessing any boat of that size, but no harm making contact in advance for any favourites, you'll get taken more seriously and potentially given more time.

What I'd add though, is avoid the weekends if you can. A sunny weekend at Southampton Boat Show can be more about crowd control than looking after prospective buyers for exhibitors. It's far more relaxed during the week.

Also, avoid 'preview day' (if they still have one - it's the first Friday). Lots pay extra to go on 'preview day' as it's supposedly quieter - making it one of the busiest days!

An early week day after the first weekend is best.

“Preview Day” has been dropped, the first Friday is a standard day now.
As above, it’s usually a lot less busy Monday-Thursday.

Thanks all, that all seems straight forward and certainly take on board the weekday v weekend.

Was planning to go the Tuesday or Wednesday after the first weekend.

Now need to draw up my shortlist

Thanks all, seems relatively straight forward and certainly take the advice on weekend v weekday. I plan to go on a less busy day during the week.

Now just need to draw up a shortlist..!

Note that unlike the old days, the UK manufacturers won't show every boat in their range. If you're interested in a particular model then its worth contacting a dealer to see if they have a stock or customer boat you could have a look at or alternatively visit the factory to see one there.
