Powerful yachts swamping smaller craft.

We travelled from Kairos marina to Datça today in our 10.3M power catamaran doing our usual 7 Knts. On 3 separate occasions much larger powerful motor yachts passed us at very close quarters travelling at high speed. The waves from these yachts hit us very quickly after they passed affording little time to turn into them. One of the waves washed fully over the bow sending rivers down either walkway. in all 3 cases the yachts had ample time and space to change course a few degrees and move away from us but did not. Is this pure ignorance of their affect on smaller craft or do they just not give a damn?

I think the term for these ****holes is 'Entitled' . Because they have loads of money (no, not envious in any way! ) they appear to think they can flaunt it and to hell with everyone else !

In the UK the military ribs coming out of Portsmouth are unbelievably bad coming close to small boats at high speeds. I would not be hopeful of a response to a complaint via the QHM Portsmouth.

It took me all my time to disengage the pilot and get my boat around to cross the wave. Interesting none of the 3 were on AIS. I would have called them to wish them a good day.

Think yourself lucky you were in a 10.3m power cat, and not a small sailing monohull.

Were you and the offenders all on the same autohelm track between two major ports, perhaps? Not that that excuses them, but could maybe offer you a chance to reduce the likelihood of such close encounters in future.

Back home after almost 7 weeks cruising the Aegean Coast. We had 10 similar incidents - some more hairy than others. I believe most, if not all, of the offenders had so called "professional" crew and none had AIS switched on. Last Saturday morning heading into Bodrum bay a 25M approx yacht doing well over 20Kph almost overturned a small sailboat and forced a 15M gulet to change course by 90 degrees before giving us the tsunami treatment.
