A while ago now I posted about changing from original volvo DPs to the Power Tec ones.
Here are the results
P T props seem stronger, the paint is staying on longer! 18months now & only cavitation burns (Volvo paint would peel off at this point)
Props are like for like & the vessel speed & engine revs are the same as before.
If I remember correctly the new props were about £75 per set cheaper
Someone on the forum said they work straight out of the box! They don't as there are 2 washers that need to be removed from old props & put on new, only a small point but crucial.
So all in all a good result so far.
Hope this helps anyone thinking of changing.

So at least we still have the P T. OPTION but would like to try 2sets of J type! Equivalent to A7 if Volvo Penta are reading this(bet they are)regards

Ps my experience is it is never just 1! I should be so lucky.

OMG optimised fluid torque distribution between blades! I must have some new J types.

I bought PT props back in 2009, they lasted 2 seasons. You could snap the blades with your hands, alloy had just turned mushy (is that a technical term?).
Don't know if I was unlucky - perhaps a bad batch. I went back to VP props.

Decisions.

I was just about to buy 2 sets of generic A series props. (Teenagers and following instructions don't seem to mix)

Does anyone know if there's supposed to be a real difference with the J series, the Volvo brochures seem to have some lovely descriptions, but no actual comparison speed wise etc.

btw - from their brochures it looks like the will still sell the A & B s for replacing parts of a set.

I haven't seen any tests, but if "the paint doesn't come off as quickly", I'd be tempted on that basis alone.
Other gains are likely to be small.

well, if I didn't have outdrives I wouldn't have been chuckling as I waited for the tide to go out and come back in while I was sat on an uncharted rock (well, it was charted, but 100m further towards shore) and then made my way to the boatyard, praying all the time.

Instead I pressed the up buttons, drifted off and made my way home, slowly but with no more than dented pride ( and propellers ).

Sorry MM1, I think I have caused a bit of thread drift here.

you egg whiskers do make me chuckle, I've been using the same props for 13 years and they weren't new then.

Well, the original set of aluminium A6's lasted 10 years before going crunchy, which isn't bad for egg whisks.
Stainless would last longer, but then everything else is dissolving instead, and if you do hit something, something expensive is more likely to break.

Hi Phil.

Bit of thread drift, but I think the difference in economy between shaft and eggwhisk boats isn't due to drag, I think its because C of G is so much further fwd on shaft boats. For shaft boats the solution would be V drives, if it wasn't for the losses in cardan shafts, V drives themselves and the increased cost.

Hi Ben
Fred drift but... may have someting to do with it but also down to shaft angle and resolved thrust plus drag of spinning shaft in a fluid.
measures to improve include shaft tunnels to improve the resolved thrust and those enclosed oil filled shafts... think a forumite has something to say about that.
certainly CofG further forward helps with attitude in waves

I had decided to change from B5s to B6s this year, but have now decided to go the J type route so will post my findings - a note of caution though, in the smallish print of the Volvo blurb the equivalent on the B series to J series is a number higher - i.e I am fitting J7s to give me the equivalent of B6.

(as a result I have 2 pairs of good condition Volvo B5s for sale if anyone is looking, pm me for details)

No problem sir. As long as it is interesting boaty stuff be my guest.
Hope we hear from someone who is using the new J types & what difference there is.

I have just fitted a J6 set (single) to my Sunseeker Offshore 25. Very smooth, tracks much more precisely, rapid acceleration, faster onto the plane. WOT seems to be about 50 rpm higher. All good, but my old props were a bit tatty. How they would compare to a mint set I can't say
