I have one of these 12v inflators and want to run a power supply for it. I have a unused 24v to 12v DC converter that is rated for 10A continuous. Is that up to the job with approppriate cabling (say 17A)? The info says it has a 400W motor which suggests 33A draw but that seems too high. Other similar inflators, e.g. this one seem to be rated 10A or less.

I've got that Inflator on my boat and plug it into a Marinco 3 pin socket but blew the original fuse 20amp and had to uprate to a 25amp one. All fine now. Sorry can't be any more help as electrics are beyond me!

There is a world of difference between the two pumps. The Rule (which is a badged up LVR) is fantastic. The ampage is probably right which is why they supply with croc clips to join straight to the battery.
I wonder if LVR (I hope I've got the initials right) do a 24v pump?
Can you croc clip to half way on your 24v battery?

Just to clarify the pump I've got, and was referring to above, is the Rule/LVR but I got rid of the croc clips, as the batteries are in an inconvenient place which is why I plug into the cockpit "heavy duty" 12v plug instead which needed a 25amp fuse for the LVR

No - or not easily. I have tested the inflator on the DC converter with croc clips and it works fine except it pops the breaker on the panel after a minute or so running. I haven't had a chance to check the breaker rating - it may be 10A or possibly only 5A. I have spares so can uprate if the cable will take a higher load.

The cable from the breaker to the DC converter is 3sq.mm, which is 27.5A. I think that's the same size as used on the lead supplied so should be okay. The cable from the converter up to the cockpit, where I want to install the socket, is 2.0sq.mm so rated for 17.5A. If the pump pulls a lot more than that I should uprate. I can do that by pulling through new cable or by doubling up but I don't want to over-engineer, particularly because it won't be a continuous load, just enough time to inflate the tender, which is probably no more than 2 mins.

LVM i think you mean. Now part of ITT along with Jabsco, Rule. Cleghorn Waring and Flojet.

See http://www.lvmshop.co.uk/

i dont see a 24 volt one but the spec says 25 amps max for the 12 volt one

They also do one rated at 13 amps http://www.lvmshop.co.uk/lvm-pumps/lvm114-lvm-whirlwind-inflator-12v.htm but I guess froim the description aimed at beach toys rather than proper dinghies etc
