Been searching through old threads on stripping the anti-slip deck paint off my Konsort. I have acres of the paint and it really is in poor condition. So I have not seen recommendations for a Power scraper. Is that because they are now called multi-tools?
Has anyone used something like this
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Makita-TM3...844&sr=8-9&keywords=the+best+oscillating+tool
Are multi-tools able to deal with acres of paint or will they burn out. Should I stick to my Bahco scraper with a tungsten carbide blade and do it by hand. Recommendations for a power tool that is currently available (not out of stock/obsolete) appreciated. Thanks.

Those rotary tools will scrape but not very well - I burned my Lidl one pout scraping carpet off a tiled floor. A much better bet for paint scraping is this
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Batavia-El...coding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=29H0P3G7417S7AV77GZX

I have one of this style ( from Lidl also) and it has pretty much scraped the entire topsides of my small dutch barge. No longer available form Lidl, or from Bosch, and haven't seen another similar for ages. I'm going to buy the Batavia one because my Lidl one can't last much longer (I've re-ground the blades for it so often they're getting worn away!)

Multi-tools are different from power scrapers. Multi-tools oscillate from side to side; power scrapers oscillate front to back. I have a multi-tool but I haven't tried it for removing paint. There used to be a decent cheapish Bosch power scraper (PSE-180E) but it was discontinued several years ago. There are other power scrapers around (search for "electric chisel" or "power chisel").

Hmmmm. My search for electric/ power chisels seems to only yield tools that are aimed at woodwork. Are they okay for paint removal on a GRP deck?
What I'm slightly suprised by is that an internet search for a power scaper is yielding such poor results. The design such as DRA refers to seems a real rarity. The Bosch is discontinued.

I suppose the reality is that there isn't much demand for this type of tool, otherwise Screwfix/B&Q/etc would be full of them!

I removed the layers of deck paint off my Fulmar with a 25mm chisel and chipping 1 to 2mm strips. I tried every other method and found this most effective, but it still took 10 days to completely remove it all. The chisel needs to be sharp for the best finish and held upright. The gel coat did get slightly damaged in places depending on the paint bond, but an epoxy filler soon fixed that. There are some photos here. http://s1294.photobucket.com/user/ConcertoFulmar32/library/?sort=3&page=2

The Bosch PSE-180E was actually a wood chisel. Mine came in a presentation box with a selection of shaped chisels for wood carving. I mainly used it to remove anti-foul and it was great at that, pity that they aren't made any more.

The action is in/out rather than side to side you get with a multi-tool. That's why it works well as a chisel and why a reversed and blunted chisel smashes antifoul into small pieces. It would work with any brittle paintwork. Unfortunately, multi-tools barely do anything by comparison.

I did find a cheaper one advertised by Andrew James at around £25 but it was always out of stock whenever I checked and I can no longer find the link at https://www.andrewjamesworldwide.com. It looks as if they stopped selling power tools quite a while ago..

Other ones I looked at all suffered from some combination of the following (usually 2 out of 3):
expensive
bad reviews
only designed for very narrow chisels

Great restoration Concerto (I've seen them before, including via WOA, but a good reminder to look at them again). I feel guilty not aspiring to your standards :), well I aspire but know I'll fall short........

Thanks Mistroma. Expensive or poor reviews or both sums it up. I did remove my AF off my Centaur with the Bahco so I'll probably get myself some posh tungsten carbide blades (£8 a pop) and see where I get to.
