I am thinking ( a dream that will become reality ) of purchasing a 30-34 ft Sport Cruiser and chartering it out in the Eastern Med. This will mean relocating my family and skippering myself. Has anyone attempted this and has anyone any advice for me. As I intend to cater for the tourist trade a marina in a pleasant setting is important, as well as close links to airports and decent hotels. I am contemplating between Croatia, Turkey and Greece. I presume that my boat will not be booked for the full season for the first couple of years, so will have to subsidise my salary by taking on another job. Is there a market for boat management on a small scale and are there any restrictions regarding imigration laws for starting a charter business in a foreign country. Lastly, if anyone knows, will I be able to get a marine mortgage in the UK whilst living and berthing the boat abroad. Any suggestions on marinas and useful websites will also be greatly appreciated.

this is a bit chancy, imho

Anyone chartering a 34 foot powerboat for more than a day will normally expect to skipper themselves. But they wil also want to go in July or August. I am not at all sure that the numbers will stack up for a ful-time job. Some charter is usually taken tooffset the cost of running the boat.

There is a charter market in Croatia and since the end of the hostilities in the area, the tourist trade is recovering well. The coastline especially around the Dalmatian Islands is absolutely wonderful and uncrowded unlike some other areas in the Med. A search engine like Google will bring up a lot of websites on this subject
Dont expect the charter business to be a money spinner as any income has to be balanced by extra maintenance costs and depreciation. Also, the boat will probably have to be MCA coded which will cost maybe £5k although some countries are more rigorous than others about this. At best, any charter business will allow you to live on board and cover most of your boating costs but not take any kind of a salary
In theory there should'nt be any restrictions on setting up a business as a UK resident. Also your idea of boat management or guardiennage is a good one as there are many foreign owned boats in the Med with owners looking for this service. A mortgage should'nt be a problem providing the boat can be Brit registered
