1) Fastest under sail .. crewed.. no holds barred
2) Fastest under sail .. solo ..no holds barred
3) Fastest under sail .. no external assistance
4) Fastest under sail .. solo ..no external assistance

5) Fastest monohull under sail .. crewed.. no holds barred
6) Fastest monohull under sail .. solo ..no holds barred
7) Fastest monohull under sail .. crewed..no external assistance
8) Fastest monohull under sail .. solo ..no external assistance

I think these would all be valid world records with sufficient distinction between them to be significant?

Erm .. I've actually been pondering this and have started to question the value of speed .. maybe we should have a record for the slowest round the world cos the challenges associated with that could also be significant ie provisioning, increased exposure to weather, mental state etc etc .. I have now come to see this as the real challenge

A New Zealand boat is about to set off single handed to do the round the world via North West Passage record. Now regarded as possible with satellite imagery assistance.

(so if you find me changing my spots and worshipping a god in about 180 days time you will all know what has happened /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif).

Well if we're talking endurance and survival maybe we should have a Bullimore Challenge - Circumnav Turtle?

yeah, at least.

the "youngest" rtw was also validly held by ellen, and i saw robin knox-jonston wearing t-shirt that said "record holder : rtw without gps, crying or being french"

I saw something a couple of years back about someone trying to spend 1000 days at sea. They had done a few hundred for practice. They had a web presence at one time but then seemed to drop out of sight. I hope they didn't drop over the edge.

Hate to look like a gullible cat, but have to ask, true or not?

Seems plausible - either true or not, it is amusing.

Re: Something we could try ourselves perhaps

Sailing to Cherbourg and abstaining. Real hardship involved here.
Most visits to Cowes/ Yarmouth/etc in a season.
Getting served fastest in the Folly.
Using least diesel in a season.

I was working on a project to be the first to cross the channel on an inflatable woman. I'd got the sponsorship deal squared away and it was all going well until I found out where they wanted to stick the mast.

How about around the planet without Fray Bentos pies?
Or fastest sailor of Caledonean parentage to find a bottle of Drambuie stopping only in Borneo?

Re: Something we could try ourselves perhaps

I really rather come at this from another angle. As a youth I was at Glasgow University and one of the challenges there was to get round the old victorian underground. The challenge was to have a pint at each station (can't remember how many... about a dozen?) no great feat in itself but the rules of engagement were that for every bodily emission one had to go back a stop .. something similar in sailing could be interesting?

I propose 2 more:-

RTW with the most unsuitable, unseaworthy craft. Anyone with Orange Equipment need not apply.
RTW with the least amount of knowledge of sailing. Fast Track YMs need not apply.

Can't police 'no external assistance' so thats out to start with. How about 'no stored fuel ie. no fossil fuels' Completely green.
