Some clever people include links in their postings which appear not with the address of the link but with something like 'HERE' or 'THIS' in blue font. How is this done - it looks so cool!

In the toolbar above the text in the 'reply' window there is a row of icons. In about the centre is a circle (globe?) with a chain link over its lower right corner. Click on it, paste your link into it, click again and you get the same link highlighted (selected) blue. Type your HERE or THIS onto that.

Thanks I appreciated that one, not that I will remember..
Now another question, another forum I use has a set of tools that work so you can ignore threads. They work on firefox, you can ignore threads and hide them etc...
Can you get similar for on here? Theres a certain anchor thread I would love to hide

If you dont have the full set of icons and formatting tools ( two rows of them) and the smiley panel on the right you need to go into your user CP and select The "Standard editor" for extra formatting controls in "Miscellaneous options" in the "Edit options" section
The icon Vyv refers to is this one
As Vyv says part of the link will be high lighted in blue. While it is still blue simply type the words you want to appear.
When you become proficient you can even stick in a clickable image.

Or use this format, except replacing the curly brackets with square ones:
{url=your desired url}your text{/url}
Example:
Have you seen {url=http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-16484371}this BBC news story{/url} about motorised shoes.

You can do the same with images:
{img}your pic url{/img}

Thanks Vic and Vyv. I had 'basic' selected and could not see the icons Vyv referred to but now I have changed to 'standard' they have now appeared. Test run now: THIS Looking forward to the summer.

It does look cool but there is a downside, as I found out.
I asked for advice some while ago and a well-intentioned soul posted, "The answer is 'here'".
The trouble is, it wasn't and I'd already checked that site anyway. Unfortunately others viewing thought that I was sorted and went off to do other things.
So the problem is that the link is 'opaque' and others will not know the source. Yep, they could click but probably unlikely.

And of course it is possible to hide something totally unexpected behind the word HERE
If posting a link it is sensible to always check that it works by clicking on it in "preview" >>>> the time you don't will, as sure as eggs is eggs, be the time it does not work.

They may have hovered their cursor over the link and seen the title in the bottom left of their screens - worth doing with dodgy-looking links anyway.

When following links as you hover the cursor over the link the URL will appear at the bottom left of the browser window. (depends which browser you use)
