Um brixham coastguard, umm brixham coastguard this is meekathara....
This is brixham coastguard go channel 67.... Could not Be @#rSED I didn't want to be alarmest, to hell with it, & then blirted out MAYDAY MAYDAY me prop shaft has dropped off. Good job I did too, was only half a mile off Salcombe. Any further out & we would have definitely sunk. It was close.

We were sinking fast & fortunately the inshore lifeboat met us with a pump. Then another pump, then a large fire service pump, when 2 fire engines turned up. Then the police turned up & a bl@@dy big crane, we've not got a decidedly bent prop shaft & missing shern gland.

Might be able to post some pictures on a proper computer when we get back & due to circs. Won't be long.
We are having free moorings, as far as we know, at Salcome town key. But the pub is a long way away.

THE LIFEBOAT GUYS WERE FANTASTC. They knew what to do & were amazing.

& who knows a good repair yard near/in Salcombe?

Oh dear, I can feel a prop shaft and prop recovery dive may be on the cards! Did you get the gps marks?

What happened?

Oh lordy, I knew hlb was tempting fate by asking whether Mucky Farter was up to this trip in a post of his a few days ago. How did it happen? Sounds like you had a lucky escape though

I agree re. SMS, especially to the latter /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Haydn, when did all this happen? I only came home from there on Thursday.
Are you sure about the free berthing? Very unlike Salcombe of old but new HM seems more clued up in trying to provide a service.

Glad you are safe.

Mmm!! you've posted recently about perhaps selling M - perhaps she's taken umbrage /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Hard luck. As it turns out we still have the prop, just a bit bent. Not going into detail, or discussing what happened till the insurance is sorted out. So far, it looks positive.

All I will say, is, the same thing could happen to anyone at any time, as far as I can see.

One second everything in the garden is lovely, the next, all hell breaks loose.

Thanks for all the support from everyone. We're back home now and the boats having all the remedial work done to minimize the damage.

We were lucky, we had a rib alongside us in seconds, so we were never in real danger. But having to gun one engine till it's possible distruction, with all the alarms going off, is no fun. As it happens the engines seem ok though.

Scary to think what would have been the situation, if we'd been only a few more mile out, let alone the 50 or so miles out, which is quite common.

Having just read the post on about mobo's speeding past raggies. Can you believe, on entering Salcolmbe. My big red deap water alarm claxton was deafening the life boat crew, I had a rib along one side and the life boat rib along the other, with blue light going. Still the dinghies were demanding right of way, they did not get it on this occasion. I was quite prepared to just bash them out of the way. Think they senced this eventually, but got very close, even folk in rubber dinghies wanted right of way. On this occasion the big deap water alarm, did more harm than good. I knew I was sinking and did not really need a reminder, that could not be easily switched off. It just hindered comunication.

Still, I'd advise anyone to fit one. I did not really think I'd got a serious problem, even though loosing an engine drive. I've lost drives before, not that big a deal with two engines. It was only an after thought, after deciding to carry on to Plymouth on one engine, that I went to look. Even then, I could only take a quick glance, before running back upstairs and pointing the boat back to Salcolmbe. Then trying Brixham CG on the hand held, which got no responce, then going down stairs and moving the helm down there for the proper radio, which had been showing problems the night before, now revieled by the parculiar flat battery. If I'd got an instant responce from Brixham, I probably would have just informed them of a little, maybe problem. As they were slow to respond on both radio's and reception was poor, was why I reverted to Mayday. Lets face it, normally you've just got yourself and SWMBO onboard, else a visitor or two that are clueless. So it's all down to you. I'd lost and stood on my glasses, more or less emmediatly, so could not give coast guards my position. Luckly being so close to Salcolmbe, it did not matter.
