I'm sure this has been raised before but I can't find it searching;

We're going to be renting the house out while we go cruising for six months this summer, probably France and northern Spain.

We can think of no one to use as a postal address as the in-laws are to old to rely on and kids are likely to be moving around. SSR registration requires a UK address.

Any suggestions?

If you are only going away for 6 months there are no issues with the SSR as you will still presumably be "ordinarily resident for tax purposes". As others have said there are mail handling companies/people/corner shops around so just put in a redirection to one of those rather than change your address.

Might be worth leaving some address stickers and a note at the house, politely asking the tenants to stick and re-post anything that does turn up. My lodger moved out a while ago and set up redirection for her post - the vast majority followed her, but I've had a couple of letters arrive that Royal Mail obviously missed.

What address do you propose to use for bank, credit card, hmrc, insurance etc. These are all things you need to consider.

For all sorts of reasons, it is vital to keep a UK address if you don't want to store up problems for the future. I bet you've got a friend or relation who would lend you theirs for the price of a case of wine now and then.

Very true. We even had car insurance renewal refused last year when they found we were non resident for 10/12. In the OP's case though he's only talking of being away for 6 months so I don't understand the fuss, what's wrong with a simple Post Office redirection to a friend's or relative's address? That way, no need to notify anyone of change of address. We use internet banking and any credit card charges are debited from bank in full every month so need to see statements.

I have said this before but i think it is worth saying again.

Certain letters will not be re-directed to another address. They will be returned to the sender.

This happened to us when we did not have a Council Tax demand forwarded to us. By pure chance I phoned the Council Office to query why we had not received anything. The reply was that there was a summons about to be posted to us THAT DAY.

I paid in full by debit card.

BUT, the interesting thing is that the summons would have been returned to sender as well. Where they would go from there I do not know.

This forwarding mail thing is a real pain in the backside. For many years I used my parents but, as with many older people, they started to moan about it and I switched to my sister. But, being off her head most of the time, I could not guarantee any consistency!

There is no simple answer I am afraid.

Our mail sits at home for many months before being opened on our return, a friend clears it from the mailbox behind the letterbox. I've sorted everything I can, gas/elec/tel/council tax/house insurance etc. on direct debit with auto renewal. I check all on-line at renewal time to make sure all's well. The pain is remembering to SORN the car and taxing it on-line so the disc is is waiting on return - somewhere amongst dozens of other envelopes!

Road Tax is another potential problem (not, admittedly, to the OP) as in order to tax on line you need the reference number which has been posted to the address to which the car is registered.

A similar problem occurred last week when my online Tesco Bank security details failed to update. They have locked the account and are sending an access code to restore it - by post. Fat lot of good that will do with me in Portugal.

How wonderful it would be just to sail away and forget it all, but you can't. Well, you can - but will pay the price on return, and most do return at some stage.

Don't know if you have your tongue in your cheek but I think it is worth exploring.

Not too different from a standard Accommodation Address Service but with the benefit of your customers knowing they are dealing with a fellow Yottie who understands the problems.

Of course there will be a billion bureaucratic and legalistic hurdles to jump first.........:)
