Heading into Lymington yesterday we spotted two thin posts pushed into the bottom.

One was in the main channel in and had a white fender attached. The other was painted yellow and had an orange flag - this one was well outside the channel.

The one with fender caused some confusion - if you want to mark something (lost anchor?) why do you need a post and a fender - plus who carries a post long enough to properly push into the mud. The second made me wonder if it was performing the same function as the first - traditional fishing technique?

Excuse the poor photos. Can someone tell me what these posts are for?

Moody Nick is spot on.

The yellow one is a race mark to help keep race boats out of the main channel on the busy Cocked Hat corner.

The other was one of several on the edges of the main channel and is part of a review of navigation as part of out Port Marine Safety Code procedure. (These are gone now.)

Thanks to all.
