Flights from England to the Caribbean are always very expensive just before Christmas because everyone wants to come out here for C'mas, and especially New Year.
Whereas flights from the Carib going the other way at the same time are usually discounted heavily, in an effort to get bums on seats - these are usually aimed at local people going to visit relatives in England.
It might be worth your while to sandbag (ie wait) and see what specials do come up later on in the year.
Virgin have had specials from here (Barbados) to England over Christmas every year recently, but they don't usually 'come up' until November at the earliest.

As a benchmark Expedia are quoting £288 at the moment for a LIAT + Caribbean Airways flight.

Flights from Martinique to Charles de Gaulle are generally pretty reasonable, esp the charter companies. It's worth a try if you can not get a good price going direct.
