Thats fantastic news, common sense at last /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Although I could cynicaly suggest it is common sense financial decision, in that there is no housing market at the moment /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Absolutely Fantastic

I'm so glad for all the lock keepers, and to a much lesser extent, to us the users of this shallow ditch.

But, But, But
what we "all" have to do,
Somehow,
by hook or by crook,

is to increase the (paying) use of the River so that EA can increase their income so that the Lock-House-Folly never has to happen again

I haven't a clue how that can be achieved, with increased mobility, only nutters - like our goodselves and a few more (well - folks who have discovered the magic of this Magnificent River), know and treasure what is there.

It's just not cool to potter about in the wet and cold at a snail's pace.

I've only been on the river for eight years, but have seen a marked decline in the volume of traffic,
boat hire companies going out of business,
Scheduled riverbus services, and booze cruises declining / disappearing.

What to do; anyone got an idea???

What great news. A simple solution to getting more money in the EA's bank, is to sell a licence to the hundreds of boats moored on the river who never go anywhere, don't buy a licence but still benefit from river levels being maintained (to an extent) buy the EA. I am fed up hearing the excuses of why we can't introduce the legislation.

What great news to end to the season, the result I hoped for but in reality not the one I expected. My thanks to everyone who helped achieve this result.

Fantastic news!

A very big thank you to everyone who has supported the campaign!!
This could never have been overturned without the relentless campaigning from those Wonderful Lockkeeper's Wives, backed up by all the public support and endorsement from MPs!

Legislation was proposed more than two years ago, but EA included a whole load of additional items which raised considerable objections. It was said to be badly drafted and was quietly dropped

Last summer a slimmed down and more focused version was ever-so-quietly slipped in (Consultations - what are they???) and AFAIK is going through "the process".

Anyway it's my understanding that on the Thames, if a vessel is "on the river" the owner must register the craft annually (aka License). The above TWA legislation includes offline moorings (some marinas and creeks). It matters not that the craft doesn't cruise. Some canny owners just boat between locks as they know that the Lockies are pretty vigilant and issue notices to boats without licenses, sorry registration.

Policing unregistered craft is a nightmare, as if a boat is not registered, how do EA find out to whom to send the bill. Removal and prosecution (like everything else nowadays is a criminal offence) is costly to both sides so EA use either as a last resort.

For once I do have some sympathy for EA.

Perhaps, Timothy, you might care to research the issue and shop unregistered boats to your local Navigation Office.
