Possibly another silly question?

My home is my 41ft Viking Yachts sedan and like other boats I've previously owned the shower drains into a plastic sump fitted with a submersible pump triggered by a float switch....
But why do boats employ this system rather than a drain directly overboard as per the sink in my galley and the sink in the heads?
Just wondering why after having to replace the float switch recently.
Cheers.

I removed the tupperware box with a float switch that either never turned on and flooded the bilge or would not turn off due to a short and curly being stuck in the float.

I used to have to dismantle it and clean it our 2 to 3 times per season.

I fitted a Whale Gulper diaphragm pump about 4 yrs ago and I have not touched it since. The only down side is it sounds like a love sick frog.

I fit little metal drain filters to the shower drain ( eBay) as these catch most of the hair etc. When they block the tray floods a bit.

Just lift the grate and clear it out. Takes moments as opposed to a bilge trip
