I posted about a Micro 18 yacht on PBO that I have the opportunity to buy.
I thought I'd post this on Scuttlebutt as more people may see it and be able to help.
I've had another look at it and think that apart from the grime and the badly stripped topside paint it's not too bad. Well, you know, sort of.
I don't know what it is thought.
Micro Class racing is big on the Continent, but not so much here.
I know it's not a

Microsail
Neptune
Ricochet
Pol55

So what is it?
Important clues are flat cockpit sole, rectangular cabin windows and the transom cut-out shape.

Anyone know. Anyone actually sailed one?

Lakesailor . Possibly you have already googled for it and found a Puppeteer 22 . Apparently there are/were several based at Howth Y.C and Ballyholme.
There were different builds of them by Morrison Boat Repairs and a person named Boyd who may be the original designer.
On the website I found there is a picture of one that needs more loving care and attention than the one you have got- this one has its bow missing where it went onto rocks!
As there were differnet builds perhaps the windows were home done.

I had a Micro 18, designed by Stephen Jones. Very nice to sail. It was the only one sold under that name afaik. Sold it to someone on Windermere in about 1980.

The transom cut out, coachroof bulkhead and hatch angles all look like it. Stem angle too. Have you got a better pic of the transom - the radius of the 'chines' from directly behind. Does it have a moulded toerail with 2 dips each side?

The windows are horribly wrong, but a homebuilder might have ignored the original design. Pulpit is different too.

Dont think it is a puppeteer micro.

The puppeteer micro was designed by C & S Boyd yachts on a commission for Holywood yacht club who required a small lifting keel boat for their shallow moorings in Belfast Lough. Not to be confused with the Puppeteer 22 by the same firm of which some 56 were built between 1977 and 1988.The Puppeteer 22 are still raced actively at Howth where there about 30 of them

Transom. The toerail is just a hardwood profile glued over the hull/deck joint. Most of it is missing.

I'm beggining to think I may not go for it. The lack of a known maker and the flat cockpit sole means the chance of selling it, or using it without permanently jigging my feeble back (and knee) are slim and likely, respectively.

Thought so, Micro 18 has tighter radius, and the toerail confirms that it's definitely....

not a Micro 18. Sorry.

The Micro 18 is a rule not a specific design. Stephen Jones designed one called Indecision, however there are many other designs to the Micro 18 / Micro Cup rule. This one looks a bit like a Humphreys Gem, but with a totally different deck & coachroof. As the interior looks to be end grain balsa, it might be a prototype.

Sad as it is to say, I think this one is probably best suited to a gallon of paraffin at the next excuse for a bonfire. dodgy amateur build of unknown design, scruffy outside and, from the looks of things, rotten inside. Run, don't walk, away.

Actually, the Jones designed boat was marketed by Iian Graham Yachts as the "Micro 18". The generic name at the time was 'microcupper'. I know because I worked with him, sold a couple and had one myself.

I saw the owner today whilst "hanging around" at Ferry Nab and he tells me it is a Stephen Jones design.
It's still in the air. I made him a rather low offer, but as he is also looking for a mainsail for my Seahawk we may come to some arrangement.

The only comment I can make is that you must have an incredibly understanding family. Do you ever rent them out? Don't think I'd have the courage to confess to ever having bought it. :)

Good luck with the project. It'll certainly keep you off the streets for a while.
