Possible Gimbal Bearing Noise???

Hi,
Had my gimble go on my 250 doral, vp5.7 etc.....
the boys at Essex marina had it onto a trailer, hauled up to top of slipway, leg off, pulled, replaced leg on back at waters edge in an hour and a half!! and back on my way!!!!!
Ask around, somebody near you must be capable of same feat!

cheers nick

The problem with this is if the gimble has failed because of corrosion, due to water ingress from leaking bellows, you haven't fixed the cause of the failure.

Bloody hell Tink you are a doom monger...and if it caught fire at the same time the bilge pumps wouldn't cope either...jees.

Anyway, better safe than sorry, sounds like you made the right choice for you. :)
Bravo2&3 are built like srick bhithouses one of mine rumbled for years before i changed it. Got a replacement from Bearing services for half the price. Think it had a slight nose on it but fitted ok. If i remember it spins over 90 degrees to pull out. One of my o/drives makes a similar noise at rest if the neutral gear from reverse is not selected cleanly.

Hi all,

Just to let you know, engineer has confirmed 99.9% certain Gimbal bearing from noise being made. Boat is now ashore, I'm down at the weekend doing the antifoul, anodes etc..... Monday the engineer is pulling the leg, so I'll update you on what we find......

Our master plan is to bring the annual 'out of the water' bit forward and enjoy some winter blasts insted of her being layed up!! Fingers crossed we'll be back in the water by next weekend........

Regards Paul.

The gimbal bearing is the one in the transom plate that supports the drive shaft as it comes in from the leg to the engine. It also takes a side load when the drive is either tilted or turn left or right.....er I think.

Regards Paul.

ok-think the yanks call it the primary driveshaft bearing?
mine has a grease point at the back of the engine bay-couple of squirts of grease in there now and then should keep it spinning......I hope!
