Is it possible to use the gps position data from a Furuno GP31 with a Lowrance 3500c? I ask because if it is it will save me mounting the Lowrance aerial outside the boat. I have emailed Lowrance but had no reply.

The NMEA data from the Furuno is already running the autopilot and other bits and pieces.

Assuming it is, any advice on the proper connections? (It needs to be simple – on the level of connect the blue wire to the orange wire, if you see what I mean /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif).

If you are putting the 3500C inside the boat its in the wrong place. You need it at teh helm. Paper chart on the chart table please. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

If your Furuno GPS has been running the autopilot, won't you want the Lowrance plotter to run the autopilot? Otherwise, you're going to have to set up waypoints and routes on both devices.

The Lowrance 3500 will theoretically accept position data from a GPS - the orange wire in the Lowrance data cable is NMEA In; the shield is ground. It will need configuring in the com port and GPS set-up menus.

Personally, I'd use the Lowrance aerial and keep the Furuno as a back-up.

The Furuno has never gone wrong. I cannot say the same about the Lowrance - the original aerial failed.

Yes you can ... if it puts out NMEA data in std format.

I have run my 3500C from the eTrex handheld as test ... as another guy posted long time ago about losing signal from his LGC2000 ... so I suggested he have HH as back-up data supplier. It works ... pages 15 - 16 & 71 of manual ....

Good luck.

Sorry for the late response. As SBC says you can feed the unit with NMEA data instead of using the Lowrance GPS module, but it didn't like talking to my Garmin. Display kept flashing and no SOG if I recall. So try it first before you make a final decision.

I'm sure you had Garmin set to NMEA 0183 ? My eTrex feeds fine and all data displays ok ....
