Okay fellow East Coasters, I have been set a challenge by the dear lady wife to find somewhere better than the average pub grub for a mid-week meal out during our August cruise

We've only got a week and we're not looking to get too ambitious distance away from base wise. So where's the bestest place to eat out within easy walking distance of somewhere to moor (and preferably walk ashore at that) within a couple of days sail from Fambridge?

Forget Burnham (too close), rule out Bradwell (been there too often) and London is now off the agenda (too stressful!)

I'm struggling to come up with a good idea so .... HELP! :D

Oostende is an easy 2 day sail form Fambridge.
Go and see Robert in Montgomery Dock.
Walk ashore and you have a wide selection of eating houses.

Couple of very nice restaurants in Woodbridge (top of the Deben) e.g. Captain's Table

Some pretty decent fare in Ipswich - along the quayside too... (e.g. Bistro on the Quay / Loch Fyne) and the Last Anchor breakfast is very acceptable on a Sunday morning...

Both are marina berth - good facilities - walk to restaurants

Great curry in Brightlingsea (Kovalam) but have to take water taxi or row - water taxi will be fine in August

Other than that some goodish pubs but they don't count as posh or even posh(ish)!

Agree with Clive's comment about Oostende if you're up for a crossing.

The Alde/Ore leaves you spoilt for choice.

Orford: The Oysterage - a timeless classic if you like your fish. There is also the posh hotel.
Aldeburgh: Lots of choice but we tend towards 152.

Harwich another good option - suggest lunch and then a gentle sail as I have never fancied a night OnBoard on the pier.

Here are three more for you to consider:-
1. The Butt and Oyster at Pin Mill up the Orwell - OK but personally I wouldn't rave about it.
2. Harbourlights Restaurant, Titchmarsh marina, Walton-on-the-Naze - great carvery - would probably have to book in the summer.
2. Kesgrave Hall, 3 miles from Woodbridge up the Deben - now I would rave about that place - it was excellent.

In Woodbridge:
THe Galley at the top of Market Square and
The Anchor - by the quay and opposite the theatre
Ate in both last weekend and both really excellent and Mrs Poecheng enjoyed both as well. First time in the Anchor and second time in the Galley.
If you are in the marina then they are about 7 and 3 minutes walk away.
Enjoy

Depends how far North you want to go.

But, if you get up to Southwold you have the Harbour Inn on the doorstep from the pontoon. A 15 minute walk takes you into town to Adnams restaurants at the Crown or Swan Hotels.

The latter two should, perhaps, be reserved for potential mistresses!

The Aboretum in Ipswich. A gastropub so not poncey but excellent food. A £4 taxi ride from Haven Marina. Book a table.

Not sure when you were last there, but I believe it was closed for much of the Summer and has now re-opened, but with a different landlord (who I heard wanted to turn it into a LGBT friendly Pub).

Menu online still looks similar though.
