Portuguese Municipal Tax

My boat is berthed in Lagos, an Algarve marina, and I have just received notice that I will be charged the municipal tax levied on all vehicles based in Portugal for 180 days or more. I suppose I will have to just grin and cough up but I am concerned about how they appear to be calculating this tax which, according to the information I received from the marina, is charged against horsepower and gross tonnage.

On questioning the gross tonnage element (a measure of the capacity of a vessel) the marina changed its approach and now says that its displacement and not gross tonnage that will be taxed.

Does anyone know the real story about what will be taken into account with this tax?

If it IS gross tonnage it looks as if they will be asking for approx 100 Euro for my 37 ft yacht with an 18HP auxillary!

Drop a line to (or email) the RYA. They may well know the answer but, if not, the RYA Magazine has started a new column called 'Flying Kites' in which we publish questions from readers which stump us but to which other readers may know the answer.

Quote from the latest RYA Magazine:

"The RYA primarily exists to promote and protect boating in the UK. We do not have the capacity to give advice on matters relating to boats kept abroad or residency in foreign countries, and have no authority to lobby other countries on boating matters or to intervene in their regulatory affairs."

Try the Cruising Association, if you're a member.

They won't know any better; they have even less authority and capacity, and you don't have to be a member of the RYA before they will help you.

But they do have a lot of contacts, and frequently find things out before the RYA. You're right, they have little power, but they're a very good source of information.

Speak to John on yacht 'Zoe', he is cruising association for Lagos and is usually on the ball with these things.
I have a boat in Vilamoura and we got hit with this tax last year but nobody seemed to know how they work it out. Looks like grin, bear it and pay up - sorry /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Oddly enough, yacht Zoe is on the same pontoon as my boat in Lagos so I will talk to him when Im next there in a couple of weeks. By then I would like to be better informed anyway because as soon as I walk into the marina reception I will have to get my chequebook out.

It seems that, as you have already suffered this tax in Vilamoura, you should be able to answer my original questions i.e. Is this tax levied on gross tonnage and horsepower or is it levied on displacement and horsepower. Lagos marina are confused on this so - what did you pay for in Vilamoura.

Thanks in advance. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
