would appreciate the views of the respected panel on pros and cons of moving my 37ft sports cruiser to portugal or med, opinions appreciated /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
I don't have direct experience of Portugal but we have moored our boat in the Cote d'Azur, mainland Spain and the Balearics. One of the main reasons we stay in the Med is to swim in warm water which by August can be as warm as 27-28degC compared to 14-15degC in the E Channel. The trouble with Portugal is that you're swimming in the Atlantic which is nearly as cold as the E Channel
In agreement with Deleted User. I'll be going out to the Med (N.Spain) in a week. We will be swimming (albeit in a wetsuit) in tideless clear water. During our five years we have 'done' Corsica, Sardinia, the Italian and French Rivieras and Spain down to Barcelona.
I've never been to Portugal, although it's on my must do list (to fly there), so I'm not qualified to compair but just to comment on the amazing adventures that the Med has to offer.
Why not base yourself on the Costa Del Sol then you can benefit from both areas. You can Cruise to Portugal no problem and return to the warm water whenever you want. I would recomend being based out of Gibraltar but Berths are impossible to get!
Definite availability in La Duquesa (though may need to buy) and Sotogrande at the moment. Estepona also seems to have availability.
Best to PM Suncoast as he is based in La Duquesa and sells berths (cheaply at the moment) If cruising to Portugal you can call in at Gib for cheap fuel as there are now two fuel berths so less q's!
I'm sure I read a thread a while ago about a chap who was charged VAT in Portugal despite being a British VAT paid boat. I can't find it now though because of the rubbish search engine.
I tried google but only found this which may be of interest. If you're still considering Portugal maybe contact them for the low down?

And if you were to swim in colder waters Mike, those whalers would be after you for sure. A catch like that would make their season. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Oi, ljs, haven't you heard? Nobody is allowed to offend anyone on this forum anymore. I am deeply hurt and victimised by your remark and a PM is winging it's way to the moderator as we speak /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Yup, I happened to open an old copy of MBY the other day and there was a letter on this very subject in it. Just another reason to have all your VAT ducks in a row
but is it not the case if you are uk vat paid and not a resident
ie holiday only the same rules would apply as on spain. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
