I have just had a short email from a guy I trust, advising that Portugal has gone unilateral and declared that Britains will be permitted to be in Portugal for up to 183 days. He was a bit sparse on details so of course, I have gone back requesting a link.?

Given that Portugal is a sovereign country and it’s links with the U.K. that go back to the Treaty of Windsor (1386), there is no reason why it cannot have a bilateral agreement with England. Schengen may rule in the EU but Portugal rules in Portugal. Could make the border between Portugal and Spain interesting.?

If this is true it is a game changer. Especially for boat and motor home users, who want to winter in the sun but do not want to get into the politics of residency. It could also go a very long way to rescuing the Portuguese economy; especially if Spain and other EU countries decline to give the same concession.

Is this reality or just a dream❓

It would be interesting if anybody else has heard whispers❓

How the situation changes.
This was the position of the Greeks - we give them 180 days in the deal and they do a Unilateral deal for us - no involvement of any others as there would be any a bilateral deal.

Suddenly the prospect emerges of having to go with a Bilateral deal if we indeed end up with no deal. This is more work - and it now takes 2 to tango. I have spoken to my contacts (the brexits liaison group) in the Athens Embassy staffed by Greeks, to see how the land lies here..... I think everything is going to go on ice now until one thing or the other happens. Something has to give..... place your bets.....

I believe that third countries have bilateral agreements on travel. The Schengen zone may only be offering 90/180 days, Britain is offering 180/360, if reciprocated, so maybe Portugal will offer that deal back.
Fingers crossed.

I have asked the British embassy in Lisbon about something similar. If they ever reply I'll copy it here. According to the official website the email address of the British embassy in Lisbon is ukinrussia@fco.gov.uk. Do you suppose the Russians are well informed about British brexit plans or do they just read what the government says?
