Good afternoon all,

Can anyone tell me where I might find the Portsmouth yardstick number for the Moody 34 that we have just bought? Not planning on doing any serious racing but you know how it is when the rest of the club is going round the cans...

Re:OK so this is going to make me look dim.......

......but just what is a "portsmouth yardstick" Sounds like a broken broom handle on HMS victory.
I thought Yards were the cross pieces on a square rigger. Yet, I don't see to many square rigged yachts out and about. So go on, enlighten me.

Thanks, but unfortunately the 34 is not on the list (actually there doesn't seem to be many cruising boats on the list at all!) I have also had a look at the Byronsoftware site but the 34 and 346 are also absent from that list... Strange as there are plenty of them about.

Perhaps I will try the Moody owners

Thanks

There is a number for a 33, but not 34.
If we need a unlisted PY number, we do a general search on the web, i.e. for Moody 34, with luck you pick up any club results with a Moody 34 racing, that has a club PY number.
May not be a RYA one, but gives you a start for club racing.

Thats probably because there are now/have been so many conflicting handicapping systems, all aiming at the utopia of total equality.... ICS, IMS, CHS etc etc this has dilured the interest in PY, which is now largely the domain of dinghies, where it is remarkably successful...

Published handicaps for loads of boats, more than on the RYA list. Presumably if you're racing and you don't have an RYA handicap, then you would have to agree the rating with your club or race officer.

By the way - do you reckon this type of handicap gives a good general indication of sailing performance? I wonder why (for example) a Snapdragon 24 rates 1325, while the almost identical Snapdragon 747 rates at 1156?

Doesn't really work for yachts - not enough of any one class around to provide a reasonable average. This is why you get anomolies like you mentioned
