Having been told off last weekend by the QHM harbour patrol for passing the new Ballast pile to stb on entering, as we used to pass the said bouy, I was surprised to find that when exiting on the stb side today, there were several boats crosing the outgoing stream to reach Haslar south of the Ballast pile. This presents the exiting boat with a crosing vessel from their port side, thus the exiting vessel would keep clear yet is in a narrow channel and already lining up for the stb, Fort Blockhouse edge of the channel so not easily able to alter further to stb without calling in on the Fort Blockhouse mess for tea! My reading of LNTM 15/05 para3 sections c,d,g is that entering vessels should keep to stb, not cross the SBC and exit north of Ballast pile having left it to port. If that is correct then boats aiming for Haslar should not carve up boats in the SBC, or have I got it wrong?, old age setting in again!

It has been a requirement to leave "Ballast" to port for some time. Refer to the almanac!

Why? The exiting vessel will be the "stand on vessel", the vessel entering in through the small boat channel and wishing to enter Haslar and thus turning to port will be the "stand off" vessel .The exception would (may) be if the vessel entering into Haslar under sail, but then if it has an engine fitted, this must be running and be in gear!!

Isn't that the wrong way round? (even ignoring the fact that they would be crossing the channel)

opps, silly me to get it the wrong way round, makes more sense that any vessel crossing to Haslar is the stand off vessel!!!, in which case the dark blue hulled boat that used my towed tender as a fender should stand off a bit more in their eagerness to get to Haslar! I also clearly haven`t read the Almanac recently for my home port: I thought at one time the Ballast bouy was considered a port hand mark for vessels using the main channel but the SBC was to the west but clearly ancient history

immediate reaction 2 weeks in is the new post inside the harbour - fine - leaving it to port works well , but

the post outside is creating confusion-so far there appears to be no consistency in terms of boats leaving it one side or another when joining the inner passage/small ships channel and makes it all a bit interesting at times- quite surprised the QHM harbour patrol don't give guidance to those who are as of yet unaware of the new instructions (do also feel sorry for those hoping to sneak close round the corner to come in from the inner passage and minimise the time in the adverse tide who are now (if they comply) forced out and into the main ebb much earlier.

Re: portsmouth small boat channel - entering Haslar

If intending to enter Haslar when coming into PH, is it necessary to continue to Ballast Pile & turn around it (leaving it to Port), thus initially joining outgoing traffic?

We were scratching our heads on Sunday when leaving Haslar and heading North up the harbour. Should we go out in to the small boat channel and leave Ballast Pile to port? We crept up through the moorings in the end.

I'm not sure what you expect! The local notice to mariners have been made very clear and it is users of the harbour's obligation to be up to date with all LNTMS. As the original poster here said, "why do I need to look at an almanac for my home port?" Well PH is a major navel and commercial port, things are changing all the time and leisure boaters need to be aware of the latest events. The QHM web site is an ideal way of being kept informed and you can register (look in the top left hand corner of the Home page) to receive the latest Notice to Mariners by email as they are released.

It is also a requirment that LNTMS are published in the local press.

The situation regarding entering Haslar has not changed - you can enter and exit as you have in the past, there is no need to go all the way to Ballast, leaving it to port and then turning round! Proceed with caution, as has always been the case when leaving/entering Haslar.

Just to make it clear for those who do not read bios or fine mine to obtuse - I am a Senior Coxswain for the QHM patrol. I'll be on duty 22nd May from 09.00 until 14.00.

No. See LTNM 156/05. It seems to say you may leave or enter the small boat anywhere on the western side. The Inner Swashway is an exception. People using it must keep the new outer pole to port. We went on about this last week. I dont think the LTNM was very clear about this exception. I guess that people going North from Haslar can ignore the SBC since the LTNM refers to vessels entering or leaving the harbour - which they aint. Going out last Friday we were just about pushed onto Dolphin by a guy who cut the corner on the wrong side of the post. I hope this is what the 'keep right' rule is for.

Exactly right! All vessels using the inner swashway to enter PH must keep the new pile to port.

I really am not sure what value this new outer pole adds, we all seem to have managed pretty well in the past without it. It seems unecessary and a total wast of money IMHO.

Re: possible use..

That's both of us out the closet then Peter! And we both on duty the same time - better stand by to repel boarders then /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif But I'm not balancing on the pole for anyone /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
