Can anyone recommend a marine inboard engineer who will offer a marine diesel service in the Port Solent marina. I am not looking for an expensive £50/hr engineer that quotes 4-6 hours ( plus a mark up on all parts etc) to do a simple annual service on a simple ( Kabota based) new ( 2021) Nanni Diesel marine engine that should take 2/3 hours.

I will supply all parts and oils and would want the engineer to dispose of excess oils and waste, I would want to assist in the work in order to learn in case of an at sea breakdown. So it’s just time and expertise that is required. Any advice very gratefully received.

Have you thought of Quirk marine based at Hamble -we have used him to service our Volvo D2 40 but I seem to recall he does variety of makes -I have always been very happy with his work, let’s you take part as much as you want to learn but clearly slows down process if having a tutorial . Most importantly he turns up when he says he will ,calls if delayed in traffic and is actually able to explain things in a non tecky way . Sadly I suspect his hourly rate might be more than you are seeking but his time ie 2.5 hours with his instruction was along lines suggested for service. Personally I am happy to pay his rate for reliability and a clean tidy engineer and not be ripped off by likes of Golden Arrow .

Alex has recommended South Coast Outboard Servicing which I have contacted about service my engines. He is a really nice guy and cant wait to get onboard to service the engines. Prices are really good as well. He seems to be busy but I would give him a call. I forgot to say I have 2 inboard engines.

Probably time to sign up for a diesel engine course. Typically on the older boat engines there is not much to go wrong and routine servicing is done alongside. the thing you might do out at sea could be to change blocked fuel filters and replace an impeller.
