Hi

does anyone have recommendations for a friendly sailing club in portsmouth harbour? Good for cruising/social as we don't race (we have a bilge keeler - or will have if our offer is accepted). Preferably one currently taking members rather than having a long waiting list.

Hardway sailing club looks like it has a waiting list. I've also found the portchester club on the internet which looks interesting if anyone has any experience.

we are also looking for access to swinging moorings, although understand that there may well be a waiting list.

(if not portsmouth then one of the other solent harbours are also of interest)

many thanks

nick

If you are stuck for a mooring pending finding a club and working your way up any mooring list, Gosport Boat Yard have many spare. The price includes a free ferry service.

Royal Southampton YC is open to new members.

There is an easy introductory membership with no waiting list. The club has two excellent clubhouses *Ocean Village & Gins on Beauleiu) and has a lot going on including cruising, racing, training and dinghy for both kids and adults.

I am a new member and have found the club very welcoming as well as very good value for money.

There are club moorings available in the Hamble and Beauleiu river - both at good rates.

I have visited RSYC and can vouch for it's friendliness & top locations.

Another option for boats which can dry out is Langstone SC which has the choice of Langstone or Chichester Harbours, friendly and supremely good value.

just a brief thanks for replies so far. we appear to be buying a boat! offer accepted subject to survey :) no deckshoes, no mooring, and no dinghy (as yet)!

Try Martin at PME (Portsmouth Marine Engineering) 01329 232854
Very friendly, ½ tide pontoon berths, 1½ hrs from Blockhouse. There is space at the moment, but that's not to say they are not already taken as it is usually full.

all good stuff thanks folks.. We are visiting Portchester in a couple of weeks and have also emailed the Royal Southampton - I might feel a little underspecified with our 30 year old 30 footer :) But not to prejudge.

I'll ask about the others thanks!!!

the emerging plan seems to be to grab a mooring for a couple of weeks in poole perhaps where she is lying so we get to sail her around in circles and check everything is all fine which will also give us time to find a berth for the year and hopefully a friendly club to join at the same time

Gosport and PME are both top suggestions - don't mind a half or 3/4 tide berth at all :)

Not at all. We are a 50 year old 24 footer. Everyone really is welcome.

If you are not bothered about walk ashore pontoons, I saw a notice about a few 2/3 or 1/2 tide moorings at Gins Beaulieu for about £700 but I don't know the details.

Hi,

Portchester SC does normally have 1/2 and 3/4 tide moorings available but a waiting list for deep water moorings.
It's a great Club, although I might be slightly biased having been a member since my parents joined in 1971 - and I'm responsible for communications :).

We have regular rallies around the Solent and a race program (both in and out of harbour) suiting all kinds of boats. Check out our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/portchestersailingclub

Cheers,

Piddy

Thanks Piddy. we might pop into Portchester SC for a pint at the weekend;

Thanks also Phil M - similarly we might nip into the royal southampton

could be a beery weekend :)

I bumped into Maggie, the membership sec yesterday and mentioned this thread. I'm sure a quick call to her would get you everything you need to know and an invite to meet and chat. I can assure everyone is very friendly and I speak as a new member this season.

Thanks Phil

Maggie has emailed us already as we have enquired about membership :) In truth contact from both of these clubs has been great and I guess you could say we are fortunate to be able to look at both. I'm fairly sure that 10 years ago that wouldn't have been the case!

cheers

It's kind of ironic that some of the cruiser sailors from Portchester are going to Royal Southampton (Gins Farm) on Saturday for a rally......

PSC is open on Saturday and Sunday Lunchtimes normally with grub available - just introduce yourselves to one of the bar staff as prospective new members and ask to speak to a flag officer if any are around. Steve, the Commodore is usually there and will give you a welcome.

Cheers,

I think there are plenty of good sailing clubs in Portdmouth harbour and we have always had a welcome at Porchester, Hardway etc but Fareham Sailing Club at the top of Fareham Creek is a particularly friendly club-we called there as visitors on a cruise 5 years ago and we liked it so much we have been there ever since!
There are club trot moorings for which there is no waiting list (I think), there is a waiting/unloading pontoon and a workshop with a pontoon that can be booked at a low cost. A very busy social side with a good bar with food weekends, enthusiastic cruising, some racers and luggers and dinghys. A healthy mix (to my mind) of power boats and fishermen also. There is a waiting list for pontoon walk ashore berthing.
The moorings are so sheltered that boats normally overwinter on the trots and there were no casualties in last winter's storms. Cheap joining and membership and mooring fees.
This is a"do it yourself" club and 2 duty sessions per year are required of members but doing the bar is a pleasant way to meet other members but there is also galley work, safety boat, race officiating and maintenance to choose from.
You really need a club that is right for you, regardless of what others like or recommend!

I have emailed Fareham Sailing Club but they haven't replied yet - thanks for this suggestion. cheers. nick
