In my experience of racing PY against cruisers, it's often the boats like Halcyons that win. The problem with having a whizzy boat out at the front in the typical club race with a convoluted round the cans course is that at the front you have to do all the navigating. The Halcyons, Twisters and similar just have to follow.

A good handicap makes all the difference. My most spectacular defeat in a PY race at Pwllheli was when I crossed the finishing line first 22 minutes ahead of the 2nd boat, but still came last on corrected time.

My best race navigation cock-up was also during a Pwllheli PY race. On one of the long legs, about 1 mile long, out at the front we went for completely the wrong mark. We were nearly at the mark before we noticed, so we turned for the right one which was on our beam. The whole fleet of 14 boats who were blindly following us saw us turn, and also turned. Of course this mistake hurt us the most, as being at the front we had gone the furthest out of the way. In hindsight what we should have done was continue to the wrong mark, round it, and then go to the correct one. Probably no-one else would have noticed until they each rounded the wrong one in turn and saw its wrong number. Unsuprisingly, we came last again.

I agree with extravert, plus if you tell the club you have no racing experience or very little they'll probably better your handicap too.
