Anyone know what's happening in Portpatrick harbour (Scotland West coast). I've been hearing since the last time I was there, rumours of the harbour buy-out and even pontoons?

Although, that was 15 years ago!

There during the summer - I was told by Willie the HM that the locals had attempted a buy out but that the priced currently asked was post development with Flats etc! It sounded like the side by the Lifeboat house might be redeveloped by the owners... but as you point out its being going on rather a long time.

First thing needed will be repairs to the walls outside, a major task I should think. We sat out a F8 SW in there and there were big waves inside the harbour. Doubt if pontoons would survive long.

There was a move to buy the harbour for the community backed by some small government funded agencies. Back in November 2002 there was to have been a structural survey published for a quango called the Small Town Initiative and approaches had been made to funding bodies, including lotto, European commission, the Scottish Land Fund etc.

As far as I am aware the report has still to be made public (minutes of the STI say it was to have been presented at the December meeting). I have looked at the minutes of the subsequent meetings of the STI and the driving force behind the move appears to have moved on and there has been no further mention of the report or purchase.

The current owners are a company called Leisure Harbours who bought the harbour for around £35k ... but restoration would cost more than that. There are legal problems too with the Crown Commissioners claiming ownership of the New Harbour. It was actually dug out of land owned by Dunskey Estates who originally owned the village.

Pontoons? I don't know if that's a realistic proposal as the outer harbour is too shallow and too exposed and the new harbour is very tight as it is.

Its a shame. The Port attracts many visitors by land and sea, its in a spectacular location with many points of interests around and yet the reason for its being, the sea defences are close to the point of no return.

If you don't know Portpatrick... it was once the main ferry crossing for Northern Ireland served by main line trains from Glasgow and Carlisle. It is still a lifeboat station and range mooring vessel tie-up as well as being an important stop off for boats making the trip between England and Scotland/Northern Ireland and vice versa.

Portparick would be transformed if pontoons where installed and there would be a lot more visiting boats. I know a lot of people don’t go across to Portpatrick because they have to lye against the harbour wall or raft out and climb ladders. Personally this does not bother me or my crew. The question has to be asked would pontoons change this great harbour for the better.

Absolutely - I made a run for it to Bagor when a SW F9 was predicted... It is quite bad enough with a F6/7 pushing in and its difficult to see the leading lights (though they are better than they were) - all part of the attraction (!)

Ahhh.. the old crazy putting green I believe.. Does the Crown still do baskets of chicken and chips?

I lost a toenail in the swimming pool at the Old Mill.

Have visited Portpatrick many many times, most recently a few weeks ago.
The Crown is still there but other eateries have opened up in addition and the pavements widened for continental style outdoor eating and drinking, weather permitting.
The entrance can be quite exciting in rough seas, keeping the marks in line, and the swell can get into the inner harbour which would make, in my opinion, the introduction of pontoons unviable, and they would last a season only.
The photos must have been taken at high(ish) tide as the ladders can be more of a climb than appears here, but still no problem.
Still one of the nicest ports of call in the area.
