heading South to Porto Palo probably Saturday or Sunday - any tips or suggestions from anyone who has been there?

e.g. dinghying ashore, where to anchor, shopping, fuel, water.

and before LadyJessie asks, I've got the pilot books and almanac, and have read them.

many Thanks

Richard

Overnighted there in June 06 but going north. Very handy stopover port. Didn't go ashore, just anchored over to the western side as it was the best for the prevailing winds. I would not expect too much from the village but very handy shelter before the crossing to Malta. On a previous crossing going south we hit a headwind as we rounded Capo Passero and retreated to Marzamemi. Very good shelter with a 10min walk to the village. Heikel says the village is dead and he is right. We did buy an icecream and some minor items from a "Mini-market" but don't plan to stock up. You should buy all you need in Siracusa then you can be independent until you arrive in Malta.

We spent a couple of nights there in May 06. We anchored on the east, quite close to the quay. The locals seemed to be friendly but nothing immediately ashore. There is a reasonable village/town about 1.5 miles away. A local guy drove me with my fuel cans to the garage in the town in his clapped out 3 wheeler "truck" - the most scary ride that I've had for many years. Just one other visiting yacht while we were there.
The port area is just set up to support the fishing fleet.
