Oooo don't know but there is a half finished marina there now, built for the olympics that is not too expensive i gather for a visiting yacht. the alnamac suggests it could be free until it's finished.

They are now allowed to charge I believe but certainly we have not been, but then we haven't been in there this year yet. I would have thought it would cost more to collect than it is worth for the few that go there.

We always anchored off Castle Cove YC but this has moved westwards and whilst their moorings are still there, the dinghy pontoon isn't and the local yobs have made leaving a tender on the beach a risky option.

Personally I would anchor as before but if challenged ask what facilities are provided, since there is no dinghy landing, waste bins, freshwater or whatever. If they insisted on charging and the weather allowed we would move to off Weymouth beach.

Thanks for the info.

As we will be travelling to the west country this year from the solent it seems a really good location for a stop off enroute there and back.

I guess we will just have to try it and see what happens. I will report back after the hols.

Unless you really want to visit Portland or Weymouth the better option is to go straight from Studland Bay to Dartmouth. There is a back eddy tide inshore along from Studland to St Albans which you can use to target arrival off St Albans at slack turning west, about 30 minutes before HW Dover, this gives you another 6hrs of favourable tide to get you will past Portland Bill, pass it about 4mls off, and into Lyme Bay, plus the next hour of tide is not a lot and not directly on the nose. If you can average 6kts boatspeed you can do this trip in 10-10.5hrs, so why waste 2hrs diverting to Weymouth/Portland and another 2hrs getting back out again via the inshore passage which is very time critical.

Agree i tend not to use weymouth / portland just for the short in transit stop. bit of a waste of time, unless needs must. the tide in lyme bay even on springs is small enough to punch. if you leave yarmouth at HW gives you six hours to get to portland at slack water then punch the tide across lyme bay. passage time to dartmouth area C.12 hours

Castle Cove Sailing Club have visistors moorings, anchoring just off is ok so long as there is not too much of an easterly. Portland Port do have a rib that comes round to collect monies, if you have not got a sticker on that shows you have paid annual harbour dues. I have not seen it for ages. If he turns up pay, if not I know of no office that you can go to so up anchor and go.

I anchor in Portland on passage East or West and have never been charged. also Castle cove sailing club are very relaxed about visitors using their moorings - at little or no charge!
