Portishead Marina slipway

It has been open since last summer. It is not a public slip, and is operated by boatyard staff only, so you can't just turn up and launch.

Cheers for that Damo.

We used to use it a couple of years ago when it was that aweful excuse for a slipway, then they built a block of flats on it so we went to the south coast.
Portishead is handy as its 45 mins down the rd from Cheltenham but waters crap.
I was there about 10 months ago, it was built, but no access to it.
I've just looked at their website, £50 to launch, i think not, outragous /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif how do they think they'll attract more custom with those prices.

Thanks anyway again for the info Damo

£50 to launch a boat?
Perhaps you get a free service and valet thrown in aswell!
We often overnight at Portishead (£16) and fuel up there (68p) which is fine, and we have allways been treated very well there, but with prices like that (£50) you must wonder what their game plan is.
It would be unfair to expect Damo to opinionate but perhaps some input from Mr Berry, the manager, would be in order?

The £50 is for launch/lock out and in/recovery IIRC. Otherwise a one-way slip is £25.

Before criticising too quickly, bear in mind that a) it is private water and your insurance needs to be checked,b) it is a commercial boatyard operation which provides the driver and tractor, If you take out the locking fee which you would otherwise be paying, then is less than a tenner for someone to put your boat in the water a rip-off?

Other reasons for controlling the slipway are that the boatyard needs to ensure access to the hoist dock alongside ( - it is bad enough at the moment getting cars moved out of the way), and the slip drops into deep water so it is all too easy to get the trailer wheels over the edge.

I have to agree with Sneddon here.
Its a lot of money still just to launch. Please dont justify their price.
Its £20 to launch and park in Torquay.
I dont need them to launch my boat,i'm quite capable /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif so they should give you an option.
When we used to go, a couple of years ago, there could sometimes be a queue of small pleasure and fishing boats waiting to launch,it got rather busy but the price was around £20 to slip and lock.
Somehow i dont see much of this business coming back at this price. This is just my reaction to the cost,my opinion.
General costs to moor up in the marina are quite sensible though,BUT!!, its not on the south coast and the waters are brown and rough /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Damo, explained like that it doesn't seem to bad, but at the end of the day, it's still £50!
But I take your point about private water etc just seems a little pricey to me.
ps I don't have a trailer!

It strikes me that maybe, just maybe they don't really want to attract the business.

I guess that's fine as they are more committed to expanding the marina rather than day launch. No offence to either party, this is just my observation.

Also, as the ramp is a tad short, they need to take a careful watch over all launches. Otherwise they are spending too much time rescuing trailers. Of course if the ramp was long enough, then they would not have to.

I'm a tight bugger, me. I remember nearly blowing a gasket when they tried to charge £7 to laucnch and park at Oxwich....

I have mellowed somewhat. When you run your own business, and add up all the costs, the insurances, wages, advertising, rates, health and safety issues, loan repayments etc, and then, actually look at what you earn, net, for a day's work, you get a far better idea of what is a 'realistic' price.

It is a difficult one. One of the things that has always put me off sailing, for many years, was the crazy cost of marina fees etc. To be honest I was ignorant, and probably still am to an extent.

At the end of the day, the £50 figure will probably regulate itself. If people pay it, it will stay, if they don't, it will come down.

What would be a winner, IMHO, would be a haul out, jet wash and re-launch for £50.
People would be queing around the block!

/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Now that may be a possibility when the developers finish our washdown area next to the slipway. I'll suggest it to the boss /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
